Going Naked In Public

Reading: Karen Rose - Silent scream
Watching: My Big Fat Greek Weddin
g - again
Making me smile: Boss, our retired pig dog, has just brought me a small stick as a present.

My second blog and now my first book, Their Marriage Miracle, is out on the shelves in New Zealand and Australia. Very exciting. But also a wee bit nerve-wracking.

I gave a copy to everyone in my writing group last week and told them it was a little like taking my clothes off in public. No, I haven't done that yet, but I'm guessing how it would feel. Uncomfortable, to say the least. It's one thing to have total strangers reading my book, but family and friends are quite different. This is something they've been waiting to read for a lot of years.

And then there's the sex. My niece asked if there was any sex in the book, and when I told her 'Yes', she said, 'Oooh, Auntie Sue, I can't read that. I so do not want to know.' She is in her late twenties and has two children, I might add. I was very tempted to staple the pages of that scene together but refrained at the last minute. When I got an email from Amy saying she'd read it there was no comment on the sex and she had enjoyed the book. A convert to romance stories? I hope so.

So, tell me, what feels like going naked in public to you? Anything you've been shying away from because it would expose you too much?

  1. Sue, I know exactly that feeling! =) I also hate playing the piano in front of people since my skill level is similar to a five-year-old's (a five-year-old who's never had lessons, mind you).

Can't wait to read your book! I love the title, love the cover and I love the blurb!

  2. Sue!!! Will check out my local KMart for your book this week. Love your storytelling so can't wait to read this. Hope it sells its socks off!!

And going naked? Nothing I can think of in the immediate future, but I remember feeling that way when I began putting my writing 'out there' for the first few times.

  3. Sue, "going naked" for me was telling people I wrote paranormal romance, but I discovered the more you do it, the less intimidating and more comfortable it feels. LOL

  4. Erm.... What you said, Sue! Imagining anyone reading my books makes me squirm. And those scenes? *cue me diving under the duvet and hiding out for the duration* I love the cover look of your book -- will watch out for it in the shops!

  5. Sue,
I've had a couple of dreams where I'm walking down the street buck naked - yeah, that was pretty awful!!! LOL
Worse is when friends talk about the apparent 'sex' books I write. C'mon, there is a plot too!!!

  6. Hi there, home at last from an unavoidable trip over the hills to Nelson.
Putting oneself out there is hard for a lot of us. I was the sales rep for my husband's business one year after being made redundant from the lab and cold calling never got any easier. I'd shift the car up and down the road three times rather than call on a client.
Rachel, any piano playing would be better than mine, and we won't mention singing.
Anita and Maree, thanks for the thumbs up. I confess to checking out the Warehouse while in Nelson as the book is supposed to be on the shelf today, but no such luck. BTW the cover is very different to the I've posted. Trying to get my web man to put the other one up.
Kylie, LOL back to you. I confess I didn't think there'd be any resistance to paranormal romance.
Do other people find their lines hard to sell to certain people? I'm not bothering to send my book to those in the family who only read highbrow books.

  7. Congratulations on your new release, Sue -- I can't wait to read it!

Ah, that naked feeling. I definitely had that when I presented an academic paper at a conference last year. Public speaking -- shudder -- makes me break out in a cold sweat.

  8. Mel, as long it only happens in your dreams.

  9. Oh, yes! I know that feeling, Sue! But I'm getting better at blocking it -- or else I'm becoming more comfortable with appearing naked in public ... not sure which it is!

Looking forward to reading Their Marriage Miracle!!

  11. It's exciting and daunting to have a book on the shelves, isn't it, Sue! I wonder if the feeling starts to ease at, say, book ten or something!

Anyway, huge congratulations on your debut! Woohoo!

    :)

  12. Hi Sue,
Congrats! Can't wait to read it. As for going naked - I have an erotic short story published and telling people about that was like I was stripping naked - so were some of the reactions!!
