Short Films that Pack a Punch
One afternoon I found myself on Bored Panda (a website that regularly fuels my deadline procrastination) and I came across this film.
Cue me reaching for the Kleenex!
Wow. Movies like this deliver such a rich story experience not only in a short time, but also without using any words. As a writer, that blows my mind. But there's no denying the deeply emotional message that comes across brilliantly in Alike.
I think many of us creative types will connect with this story, whether we faced those emotions with someone else telling us to go down a certain path or (like me) whether we have those battles internally.
There have been a few of these short animated films that really touched my heart. Some that I really loved include:
Piper, an adorable film about a baby seagull finding confidence near the ocean, which came out last year.
Knick Knack, is a fun short about a snow man trapped in a snow globe. It came out in 1989, so by today's standards the graphics don't look like much. But for the time it was truly amazing. You may remember this if you ever watched Toy Story at the cinemas, because it played before the film.
Are you a fan of these animated short films? Any favourites that you recommend?

That's so beautiful, Stefanie! I love those short little animated films, they pack such an emotional wollop!
ReplyDeleteThey really do! Amazing how they can say so much with so little.
DeleteWhat a gorgeous film, Stef. I confess I haven't watch many of these types of animated films - but this was a cracker. Going off to hug my children and play the piano.
ReplyDeleteYes, they certainly hit home, don't they? Hope the piano playing was fun :D
DeleteHi Stef! I admit I haven't seen many of these. I'll have to investigate more. Thanks so much for the prompt!
ReplyDeleteHappy viewing :D
DeletePixar's shorts are fantastic! All that warmth and poignancy in such a short viewing. My faves are Lava Me and La Luna. They make me cry every time!
ReplyDeleteLava Me was so sweet, wasn't it? I really enjoyed that one :)
DeleteStef, I've not seen as many animated shorts as I'd like so thank you for this link and the inspiration. I do love short films. I'm amazed by the skill-set needed to convey both story and emotion (and to provoke loads of after-thinking) in a short format. There was a travelling festival of shorts that toured the countryside for several years a few years back and we loved loved loved it. So much variety, so much talent. I'm always fascinated by different storytelling methods!
ReplyDeleteIt's so inspiring to step outside what we do and find creative inspiration in other forms! The travelling festival sounds like a great event.
DeleteCan't say I'd come across the animated short films previously, but will definitely be having a look for them after this.
