Big Day (And Night) in Romance

Some of you may already know, but on Saturday the Australian Romance Readers Association (ARRA) had a BIG day out.

I had the pleasure of attending a Romantic High Tea as a special guest, along with good friends and too-fabulous authors, Kandy Shepherd and Avril Tremayne.

To say it was a lovely afternoon would be an understatement. The food was quite delicious at the Castlereagh Boutique Hotel, but the conversation was even better. You know when you sit down with romance readers you're going to have a fun time. You never know what will pop up in the conversation!

We had a few hours between the High Tea and what was coming that night - the ARR Awards! So obviously that was spent in the bar chatting with other authors who were coming in from all corners of the country for this event.

To put it into perspective, these awards are for the Favourite books from the preceding calendar year, as voted by Australian readers. Readers vote as they go, supplying their reading list to ARRA, with points, and this goes towards compiling a list of finalists for a final round vote. These titles must be published within that calendar year, and are not restricted or limited to Australian romance authors - although it is so humbling and pleasing and pride-inducing to see there ARE so many Aussie (and NZ) authors who feature in the finalists lists.

Admittedly, I've always viewed these awards as very special, as its READERS who suggest the books they've really enjoyed, and then vote on at the end. To get your book on the list in the very first place is an achievement in and of itself. And yes, when finalist authors in those categories say 'we're just happy to be nominated', we really mean it, because we know how this contest works, and it really is of huge import to us that readers cared enough about our books to include us.

I was nominated in two categories, one of which was Favourite Australian Romance Author. Well, that nomination totally blew me away, and I'm so grateful that readers put my name forward for it. This is a category where you have the mavens of Australian romance (yes, I do sound like I've got tickets on myself, don't I, but this is why I was so stunned to be included for the first time, this year). Historical romance author, Anne Gracie, won (along with her slew of other awards), and you must check out her Merridew Sisters and her Chance Sisters books to get an idea of why she keeps winning awards...

For me though, the biggest surprise was winning the Favourite Romantic Suspense Award for my novel, Heart Breaker.

See. That expression is shock. It was such a strong category (OMG, again I sound like I love myself sick), with some really great books, and I always have a plan for this event: Tackle the person who wins the award at the end of the night. I already had my strategy mapped out for each potential winner, but yet reluctantly because they're also really beautiful, lovely ladies. Alas, I didn't actually have a strategy if I WON, and I've discovered I suck at thank you speeches on the fly... Anyway, the other authors in this category are very, very talented, so you should definitely go check out their books. Pay close attention to Amanda Knight and her debut novel, Situation Critical. Amanda won Favourite New Author, and was nominated in FOUR categories, so she is an author star on the rise.

It was a fantastic evening, and I wanted to send a shoutout to the ARRA organisers. This event is at least a year long in the making, with collecting and collating scores and titles, and then opening up for votes, tallying, etc, and the organising of the night itself. It truly is humbling to see all that hard work in the name of the romance genre. I also wanted to say thank you so much to the readers for buying our books, reading them, commenting on them, voting for them, and also for turning up on the night, we LOVE meeting you all and talking books.

Thank you also to the sponsors - Booktopia, Harlequin Australia, Hachette Australia and Allen & Unwin - it is such a special night. I treasure my new shelf buddy.

So.....that was my weekend! How was yours?

In Sickness and in Health

Well, this post was going to be all about my experience of the fourth Australian Romance Readers Convention which was held by ARRA at the QT Canberra over the weekend. I was due to attend and be part of the book-signing and on a panel titled, A Rich Man's World. The panel included Melanie Scott, Sofia Tate, and Sylvia Day and was chaired by Kat Mayo from bookthingo. How great would that have been?

Alas, best laid plans…

I got sick. Very sick. Probably the sickest I’ve ever been.  Over a week in bed. Hooray. Just what the doctor ordered.

You know how you dream sometimes about how wonderful it would be to spend a week in bed reading, watching movies and generally veging out? Well, turns out it becomes really boring after about five minutes. It certainly was for me. I’m a woman of action and lying around nearly drove me insane. And I was too sick to do any actual work, so very unproductive all around.

But, I’m on the mend now. In fact I have to get better as I’m doing a bookshop signing at my local book store, Mary Ryan’s, this coming Thursday. I’ve got together with women’s fiction author, Lisa Walker and the fabulous and hilarious Mandy Nolan. We will be chatting about writing, books and love.

Lisa recently launched her new book Arkie's Pilgrimage to the Next Big Thing. I’ve nearly finished Lisa’s brilliant story and it is such a great read. Kerry Goldsworthy from the Sydney Morning Herald said:

“This is a funny, charming and thoughtful kind of chick lit, full of witty one-liners and intriguing minor characters, realistic about the vicissitudes of love and desire.”

Mandy’s book Boyfriends We've All Had (and Shouldn't Have) is laugh-out-loud funny. I read it last year before I appeared with Mandy and my fellow LoveCat, Amy Andrews at the Byron Bay Writers Festival. Wasn’t that a blast, Amy?

If you are in Byron Bay on Thursday, 12 March at 5.30pm, drop into Mary Ryan’s for a fun night! I’d love to see you there.

So, have you ever been sick and missed something you’ve really been looking forward to?

Books, Laughter and Learning

by Jennifer St George

The last two weeks have been huge for me.  I was part of the team (the Communication Manager) that put on the Byron Bay Writers Festival, 1-3 August. It was the most successful Festival in the event’s 18-year history.  Ticket sales were up 20% on last year as were sales from the onsite bookshop.  I’d spent the preceding six months talking to journalists from all forms of media about the event and the resulting coverage has been fantastic.

The Festival was also my first foray into being a Festival participant. Fellow LoveCat Amy Andrews and I featured on the panel, Be Still My Beating Heart: Writing Romance chaired by the hilarious Mandy Nolan. As we were scheduled at the same time as Jeanette Winterson OBE, I was worried about audience numbers, but by the end of the session our marquee was almost full.

The panel was fantastic fun and we tackled a number of the myths about romance writing and generally had a fabulous time.

So I wrapped up that Festival and spent the next two days preparing for the Romance Writers of Australia conference, Romance Rocks being held in Sydney.  I ran two workshops with Sarah Wendell from Smart Bitches, Trashy Books and romantic suspense author, Helene Young; participated in a debate at the Literacy High Tea; was an interviewee on a panel about début authors and had fun with my fellow LoveCats in a session on writing category romance.

St George and Annie West at RWA
conference
The debate was brilliant. The topic was Alpha Heroes are Better than Beta Heroes.  I was on the affirmative team with Cherry Adair and Christina Brooke. The opposing team consisted of Amy Andrews, Sarah Wendell and Anne Gracie. Yes, quite formidable opponents.  Our team sang, knitted, role played and argued with passion.  But sadly, we lost.

The Australian Romance Readers Association held an amazing book signing event. It was lovely to meet readers and sign a few books.

Amidst the mayhem of the leather and lace cocktail party, the Gala Dinner and catching up with friends, I attended lots of highly informative workshops and will focus on bringing those lessons learned to my current manuscript.

I arrived home last night inspired and invigorated and exhausted. It's such an incredible privilege to have been immersed in literature and books for the past two weeks. Books!  How could you live without them?

I’d love to hear about an event you’ve attended recently that inspired you.

Jennifer St George's sexy stories feature courageous, career-minded heroines, strong heroes in glamorous international settings. The Billionaire’s Pursuit of Love is available now at Amazon, iTunes, Destiny Romance and Google.

Putting on the Glitz!

There are a lot of pros and cons to being a writer. One of the pros is I don’t have to get out of my pajamas to go to work! That can also, by the way, be a con  :-)

But occasionally, I do get to frock up and go out and this weekend just gone in Sydney was such an occasion. ARRA (the Australian Romance Readers Association) held their annual awards and as I was up for a few - as were some other Love Cats - I decided to make a bit of a weekend of it.

You can just see the arch of the Syd Harbour Bridge in the distance
Firstly Shannon Curtis and I visited the Momentum offices and chatted with the lovely Joel Noaum and the gorgeous Tara Goedgjen who had worked on our Bold and Beautiful books. The lovely Patrick got us coffees. And then I insulted him by asking him how long he’d been the intern for. Ooops!  But now it’s a bit of a running joke which we all think is hilarious and he’s humouring us :-) He took this pic.

Note to self - never piss off the guy who takes the pic! :-)

Then, in the evening, Shannon Curtis, Ainslie Paton and I were on a panel at Parramatta Library. I think a good time was had by all and we had a great Thai meal afterwards and were joined by the lovely Ingrid (a reader) who helped us brainstorm titles!

Shannon put me up at her house that night and, after a rather late night, I was treated to her sexy dish washing display in the morning.

And then we left for the hotel and had a sneak peak at the stunning room we’d all be partying in later – isn’t it gorgeous?

Then I bumped into fellow Love Cats – Annie West and Michelle Douglas, who were also up for awards and we did lunch.

In the evening, in keeping with 2014 being my Year Of Purple, I frocked up in a purple gown and wore my new purple earrings made for me by fab new medical author Amalie Berlin. They’re tatted and absolutely gorgeous! So many people complimented me on them, so thanks, Amalie!

Doncha just love soft focus? :-)

And then it was time to wine and dine and catch up with old friends and fabulous readers

Tina Clark

Rachael Johns and Cathryn Hein
Mel Scott and Kelly Hunter
Barbara and Lynne - two lovely readers.
Dakota Harrison

Anna Valdinger from Harper Collins

And to cap it all off,  I won the best contemporary romance category for Holding Out For A Hero which was so exciting and thrilling and I even remembered to thank Patrick the intern :-)
I’m still on a high!

Joel Noaum from Momentum

In fact there were 3 winners at our table - Kelly Hunter and Kylie Griffin being the others.
Aren't they all pretty?

Then there was a lot of posing with the gong ;-)

Shannon looking tres glam without her pink gloves!

Cathryn Hein

The oh so lovely and supportive Helen Sibbritt

Fab blogger Kaetrin
Joel from Momentum (who had a fabulous night with another of their authors the amazing Kylie Scott winning 2 awards as well!) took us out for celebratory drinks after so, consequently, it was a very late before Shannon and I got to bed but we couldn’t resist one last pic with my baby.

I’d like to thank everyone in ARRA who made the night so amazing and to all the members who voted in the awards.  Am looking forward to frocking up again next year!

What ARRC2011 Has to Offer!

Fancy a romantic weekend on the beach? Romance is in the air at Bondi, Australia's most famous beach, where the second Australian Romance Readers Convention will be held at the Swiss Grand Resort and Spa on 25-27 March 2011.

With international bestselling authors Anna Campbell, Nalini Singh and Cindy Gerard headlining, we have over 30 of Australia's favourite romance writers sharing their love of romance.

Delegates will be spoiled for choice with a wide range of panels, and exclusive events such as the 2010 Australian Romance Readers Awards dinner and our silent auction to support those affected by the recent floods in Queensland.

Panels
Ever wondered why we love vampires, werewolves and creatures of the dark? Or why short category romance has endured for 100 years? Regency fans are in for a treat as Anna Campbell and Anne Gracie talk about the appeal of the Regency hero and challenge historical romance stereotypes. Whatever your taste, we have a panel for it.

Aspiring writers aren't left out either, with a Publishing Ins and Outs panel.

And due to its amazing popularity at ARRC09, we have two sessions, This One Time and This Other Time, where authors tell us about the crazy side of writing, like what they do in their nonexistent free time, obsessive fans, and the lengths they go to in the name of research.

The hard part is choosing which ones to go to!

Book-signing session
This year, we have more than 30 authors on hand to sign their books for you. This is a fantastic way to get a little face time with your favourite authors and ask a question about their series or your favourite characters. And who doesn't love a signed book?

Awards Dinner

Our awards dinner is a great excuse to dress up and the winners have been voted for by real Australian romance readers. It's just like going to the Oscars, only without the long flight.

Silent Auction

We've all seen the devastation caused by the floods in Queensland and may even know someone who has been affected. We have had an overwhelming number of donations pouring in from generous authors all over the world. With almost 200 items to bid on, including jewellery hand-made by Anne Gracie, canvas prints of photographs taken by Keri Arthur, several ARCs, critiques and of course, signed book bundles. There is even a royal treatment package at the Romantic Times convention in Chicago! The auction has so much on offer and supports such a worthy cause. If you haven't had a chance to browse through the items yet, you can find them here: http://australianromancereaders.wordpress.com/silent-auction/

ARRC2011 also offers something we couldn't fit into the program and that is the charged atmosphere of being surrounded by other romance readers just like you. This is a great opportunity to meet other people who share your interest in romance, discuss your favourite authors, swap recommendations and celebrate the books we love.
