Best Laid Plans...

I was going to blog about something different today but right now our household is crazy and chaotic as we deal with the aftermath of our oldest girls' wedding day.

The day itself went swimmingly (despite the wind and rain that destroyed the girls' hair during photos after the ceremony!) And everyone there had a truly wonderful time--even the groomsman who had pneumonia and was only just released from hospital the day before the wedding and even one of the groom's other brothers who become violently ill on the Friday night with either food poisoning or a gastro bug and ended up in hospital on Saturday morning on a drip.

What we didn't count on was the groom becoming even more ill the day after the wedding, necessitating yet another family member being taken to hospital and then the following day, his other brother and eventually the bride and the bride's Oma (my mum) all fell foul of the bug. Thankfully my mum hasn't had to be taken to hospital like the other four but, boy oh boy, this wasn't the post-wedding wind down we had counted on.

The honeymoon has had to be postponed (thank heavens for travel insurance!) and I'm almost beginning to wonder if we had a wedding. It seems so long ago already because we've been so busy racing to and from hospital and to the supermarket to stock up on gloves, disinfectant and hand sanitiser!

I'm looking forward to seeing more of the wedding photos because I think they will help take some of the tarnish off the past few days while the family recovers and sips ginger beer, electrolytes and has a very bland diet.

What are your tried and true remedies to recover from food poisoning or gastro bugs? I think I'm going to keep a file for future reference!

  1. Gorgeous pics, Yvonne! Thanks for sharing But ugh and hugs on the lurgy. Sounds awful. You poor thing - fingers crossed you escape it!
Tried and true remedies. Well its not a remedy but I find sucking on a hard lolly or lollypop is good for a sugar hit in between vomiting without loading your stomach with anything. It also helps your mouth taste less disgusting!

    1. Good thinking, Amy! Thanks for the tip.

So far I've managed to dodge the bullet. My son-in-law's brother must have thought I was a mad woman when I picked him up from the hospital ED wearing a mask and gloves! ;-)

  2. Yvonne, what a time you've had. Hope things are settling down. Brings back memories of my wedding. The 'bug' my youngest bridesmaid caught from a class mate at school, galloped through the entire wedding party. My hubby came down with it the first day of our honeymoon and me, a couple of days later. It was a week before we were seen out of our room, to lots of nudge-nudge-wink-wink-they're-newlyweds type comments. If only we'd been in there having as much fun as they all thought!

    1. Oh, Pam, that's terrible. I guess in hindsight it makes for good stories but I think we can all do without something like this, can't we?

  3. Oh dear, not what you want for the big day! I hope everyone is feeling better soon, Yvonne. Hmm upset stomach remedies was always dry crackers and flat lemonade in our house. Just staying away from anything sugary or milky.

I hope their honeymoon is wonderful when they're feeling up to it xx

    1. Thanks, Stefanie! My mum has bounced back the fastest and she ate a couple of Dutch biscotts the morning after. She thinks that was the key to recovery and who am I to argue! I totally agree on staying away from anything milky on sensitive tummies.

  4. Oh poor you. The wedding photos are gorgeous, the couple look so happy, the dress is beautiful, but...what a shame. Like Stef, I go to flat lemonade (full sugar to help with blood sugar) and toast or, as my hubby always says...whatever the patient feels like eating. Hopefully some of it will stay down. Fingers crossed you're done with this now. xxx

    1. I just got off the phone with the bride and she's showing signs of improvement. Still aching head to toe (no fun throwing up with a herniated disc in her lower back, that's for sure!) but on track to leave on their honeymoon at the end of the week. Yippee!

    2. Oh, and funnily enough she feels like eating cake! I guess that means she's well on the road to recovery. Trouble is, the leftover cake is all here at our house!

  5. The wedding photos look lovely, Yvonne, but what a shame that the bride and grooms plans have been so totally scuppered. Well, I guess not totally as they will still get to go on their honeymoon...but hugs to them on the delay (and the horribleness of the lurgy), and hugs to you on all the hospital trips and the worries. I have my fingers crossed that everyone else manages to avoid the lurgy...and that the wedding photos arrive soon to help you remember all the happy from the event.

    1. Thanks, Michelle! It has been a shame but at least they still have the honeymoon to look forward to even if it means they'll miss a friends' wedding now. Frustrating when everything is so well planned out in advance and something you can't even see can blow everything out of the water. Ah well, that's life, right? And yes, the rest of the photos will be wonderful, I'm sure. The photographer is very talented when it comes to capturing the essence of her subjects and she did a terrific job of the kids' engagement pics. Something else to look forward to!

  6. Hi Yvonne

Those photos are beautiful and sending hugs and hoping everyone is feeling lots better now. As for remedies lots of water and rest I don't have anything else or maybe ice blocks to suck on.

At our wedding my Mum had pneumonia and one of the groomsman had concussion after playing footy that day and went home before the main meal and the best man had a broken ankle from playing soccer but didn't know till after the wedding his ankle was so sore and at one stage he took his shoe off and then had to put it in a bucket of ice to bring some of the swelling down so he could get his shoe back on for more photos :)

    Have Fun
    Helen

    1. Wow, Helen, thanks for the hugs! Everyone is improving at last! It sounds like you have some interesting memories from your wedding! Yes, iceblocks! Why couldn't I remember that. When my girls were little we always had lemonade iceblocks in the freezer and they were a Godsend for anyone recovering from an upset tummy.

  7. What fabulous inspiration for a wedding story, Yvonne! I think you could get three or four novels out of that day. I hope they can all look back on it and laugh in a few months or years time.

    1. Hi Melanie! Yes, perhaps with a bit of distance there may be inspiration there, LOL! For now I'm just relieved they're all slowly improving. My poor daughter has a herniated disc in her back so all that convulsing was extremely hard on her. She's taking a bit longer to come right but sounded so much more like her old self today.

  8. Yvonne, the photos are marvellous and I'm so pleased to hear the wedding went well BEFORE illness struck. I'm afraid I have no remedies for such sickness, but like Helen, I recall sugary iceblocks are a great way to rehydrate. Worth trying?

    1. I'll make sure they have iceblocks in their freezer should this every happen again. Right now they have a very close relationship with hospital grade disinfectant! LOL! But from tomorrow, that relationship will be with sun and sand in Rarotonga! Finally!

  9. Beautiful pictures and love the wedding party's outfits (assuming most or all was Tegan's work).
Haven't got any bad wedding stories myself.

As for gastro type bugs, I just go with trying to stay hydrate and trusting what my body is telling me.
At least everyone got through the wedding before things turned totally to custard.

    1. I think you're right there, Lyn. Listen to your body. My poor mum still has next to no appetite but I've got a couple of dinners for her that will hopefully tempt that back. It's always harder when you have to cook for yourself when you're not feeling well. And, yes, thank goodness they weren't ill on the wedding day. That really would have been dreadful.

    2. P.S. Yes, the bride's gown, the bridesmaids' dresses and the groom's and groomsmens' ties were all by Tegan Joy NZ. Such a proud day for us on so many levels!

  10. How heart breaking for everyone, Yvonne. As long as everyone's getting better though, that's the main thing. but disappointing after all the build up. they're never going to forget their wedding, that's for sure.
No sure fire remedies from me.
    Love the pics.

    1. Yes, regrettably the not so pleasant memories have supplanted the wonderful memories for now. But, the kids finally got on a plane today and headed out on their honeymoon (nearly five days late) so I'm sure they'll have time to rest and rejuvenate and reflect on what a beautiful wedding day they had.
