Reading binge

For the first time this year I've indulged in a mini reading binge, and it's been rather divine (all right, a lot!). Better yet, I've discovered some new to me authors. And as we're all readers here I thought I'd share them with you.

Virginia Kantra’s Carolina Dreaming. Our own Rachel Bailey recommended this to me and it was an unexpectedly emotional read with great characters who could’ve followed predictable trope-y, plot-y paths, but didn’t. This was a book that had all the feels. And I can’t wait to explore Kantra’s Dare Island novels further.

Roxanne Snopek’s Forever Yours, Sweetheart. This was just a lot of flirty fun, with an ending that will have you cheering. I hate slut-shaming, so I found this book particularly satisfying. Also, there are dogs…and I love the dogs.

JoAnn Ross’s Herons Landing. I don’t know why, but I thought Ms Ross might be a bit…mumsy, but there was nothing mumsy about this one. It didn’t start off quickly, and there was quite a bit of background to experience in relation to the two leads, but I didn’t mind in the least because Ross writes with authority…and Honeymoon Harbor (the setting for her series) was just such a fab place to spend time in. So, I wallowed. :-)

Sherry Thomas’s My Beautiful Enemy. This was a book that blew me away. It’s a romance that pushes the boundaries of the genre, and succeeds gloriously. The heroine is half-Chinese half-British and the novel is written with a definite Chinese sensibility, and I adored it. I adored everything about it—the heroine is ‘cheer out loud’ empowered, the hero is deliciously unflappable, and the pace is gripping. I can’t wait to read my next Thomas novel (which will be Not Quite a Husband as soon as I find the time).

And I’ve just rounded my little binge off with a tried and true author, Kelly Hunter, with her wonderful Outback Brides: Maggie’s Run. It’s intense and powerful and I couldn’t put it down.

I can heartily recommend each and every one of these titles. So what about you, what can you recommend at the moment, and have you discovered a new-to-you author this year?

SUNDAY SMOOCH: The Secret Son's Homecoming by Helen Lacey

Welcome to another LoveCats DownUnder Sunday Smooch!

Today we have a smooch from Helen Lacey's July release from Harlequin Special Edition, The Secret Son's Homecoming.

But first the winner of last week's Sunday Smooch Giveaway is Ginette Kinellar.

Please contact Annie West by emailing annie AT annie-west.com to receive your copy of Inherited for the Royal Bed.

And now for today's smooch.

To learn to love…he will have to let go

The illegitimate son of the wealthiest man in Cedar River, Jonah Rickard spent his life avoiding his father. Forced back home for a wedding, he's brought face–to–face with the only woman to ever threaten his hardened heart.

Connie Bedford knows what it is to be haunted by the past, betrayed by trust…scared by desire. Years ago, Jonah's father saved her. Now only Connie and her love can save Jonah – and, maybe, his family…

Scene set-up:

Connie and Jonah have been out on their first ‘real’ date and they are now back at her home.

The Smooch:

“Jonah reached out to grasp her chin, gently tilting her face upward. “Did someone break your heart once, Connie?”

“My heart,” she whispered, as though the memory hurt her down to her very core. “My spirit.”

Jonah’s insides crunched. “I understand caution when it comes to getting close to people,” he said, rubbing his thumb across her cheek. “Sometimes I think I invented it. But I’m not out to hurt you or make empty promises. I just want—”

“Sex?” she said, cutting him off.

Heat smacked his cheeks, but he wasn’t about to lie to her. “I’m a guy,” he said and shrugged. “We’re kind of programmed that way.”

She laughed humorlessly. “At least you’re honest about it.”

“I don’t lie, Connie,” he said, more seriously. “I will always tell you the truth about my motives. It’s obvious that I’m attracted to you and I think that’s mutual...right?”

She nodded. “Yes.”

“So, we’ll just see where it goes.”

“To bed, you mean?”

He shrugged again. “If that’s what you want.”

“And it’s completely my decision?”

“Of course,” he replied. “Always.”

She took a moment to respond, and then nodded. “Okay.”

“Okay?”

She nodded again. “Maybe we will end up in bed. We’ll just have to see.”

He smiled. “Is everything usually so cut-and-dried with you?”

“Usually,” she replied. “We doormats are generally the boring, black-or-white type.”

“I thought you’d forgiven me for that remark.”

“I have,” she said softly and moved closer. “I’m making fun of you.” She looked up at him, meeting his gaze, her mouth slightly parted, her eyes wide. “You can kiss me now...I mean, if you still want to.”

Jonah’s entire body tensed. He wanted to. Very much. She was close, and when her breasts touched his chest it almost sent his libido into overdrive. Jonah took a breath, grasped her chin and hovered his mouth over hers. They’d kissed before, but somehow, being so close, hearing her breathe, inhaling the scent that was uniquely hers, Jonah experienced an acute sense of being in the moment, of feeling and sensing nothing else other than everything that was Connie. It should have set off alarm bells in his head. But instead, he felt the rightness of it through to his blood and then felt it seep deep into his bones. He was hooked. Totally at the mercy of his desire for her. With no foreseeable way out other than to make a run for it.

Which was out of the question.

* * *

Connie slipped her arms around his shoulders, feeling the muscles bunch beneath her fingers, feeling every part of him in a way that was impossibly intimate and breathtakingly scary. His eyes glittered brilliantly, meeting hers without blinking, holding her gaze with such burning intensity she could barely draw breath. They were breast to chest, thigh to thigh, and she waited for the usual panic to rise, for her old fears to make a comeback, for the memories to resurface and warn her off. But oddly, they didn’t. Because she wasn’t afraid of Jonah. She desired him. She liked him. She trusted him. And trust had always been in short supply in her life.

Strange, some faraway voice whispered to her, that she trusted Jonah without really knowing him very well. For Connie, trust was earned, and garnered by time and integrity and actions. She trusted Liam and J.D. because they had witnessed her at her most vulnerable and saved her from the worst moment in her life. She trusted her friends Annie and Nicola because they had never had a morbid curiosity about her past like some others had shown over the years. And that, she realized, was it.

Four people. A small circle of trust in any language.

And now, inexplicably, there was Jonah.

Crazy. Senseless. Potentially foolish, because he had so much emotional baggage that it was certainly going to end in disaster...or at the very least, her broken heart.

But when his mouth touched hers, she was gone. He softly coaxed her lips apart, gently anchoring her head with a steady palm at her nape. There was nothing rushed, nothing overpowering, nothing other than a gentle coax and a request for permission. She gave it instinctively, and when his tongue touched hers, Connie experienced a deep surge of desire spark through her veins. His kiss was something she would never get enough of. And there was no threat, no demand. He was asking for her to kiss him back, seeking her agreement to ensure that they were heading to the same place, a place that had always terrified her, because it meant absolute surrender.

And surrender meant vulnerability...something she’d vowed never to allow again.
Connie moaned, hearing the sound echo low in her chest, feeling the vibration through her blood and across every nerve ending. It’s just a kiss. But it was more. That’s what struck her the most. She’d been kissed before. She’d put herself out there and gone on several first dates...but never had a man’s kiss affected her on a such a deep, sensory level. The fact that it was Jonah who wreaked such havoc with her senses...Jonah, who was in constant conflict with everyone she cared about the most, was confusing and contradictory to everything she thought she believed in.

But when his mouth touched hers again, when he deepened the kiss and his tongue danced with hers, she was utterly and categorically undone. She pressed closer, feeling him aroused against her, but she sensed no threat and no need to run. That’s what shook her...that he wasn’t a threat. That he would never be a threat. That she’d found a man who made her feel safe.

And she wanted him.

She wanted him in ways she’d never wanted anyone before.

Reader question from Helen:

Do you like the bad boy? The guy who’s judged as being bad news but really has a heart of gold? Or do you prefer the straight up, Mr.  Nice Guy?

Leave a comment to go into the draw to win a signed copy of The Secret Son’s Homecoming.

And don't forget to come back next Sunday when the winner of today's giveaway will be announced and a new smooch will be posted!

Happy 4th! by Clare Connelly

It's Independence Day for our American friends, and I have to admit, this is an American holiday I'm partial to. I know it has no personal relevance to me, but American culture is so pervasive (from the books we read, the songs we listen to, the TV shows and films we watch), that somehow we've ended up paying homage to Independence Day year after year. Also, I like to celebrate (any excuse) and I love to cook (seriously, American food, drool!). A few years ago, I found a recipe for southern fried chicken (thighs, marinated in buttermilk for 24 hours coated in flour and spices, deep fried until cooked and crisp - so good!) and I've made it every year since, served with slaw and American beer.

So, in honour of July 4th, here's a list of my favourite America-culture movie/TV shows (and I'll pop the recipe for the best fried chicken around at the bottom, too).

1. Sweet Home Alabama

From country hoe-downs to New York city, Tiffany & co, Civil war recreations -- this movie is full to the brim with American culture references and is just so damned fun to watch!

2. Top Gun

All the feels for this classic American flight-school movie. You can be my wingman anytime...

3. Air Force One

I just love this American-president-in-peril trope and the scope for high-octane drama, especially when the best American movies like this seem to have heroes that fight like they were born as GI Joe.

4. Sex and the City - especially Hamptons episodes!

Sex and the City is often described as a love note to New York city and if that's true, it's one of the most passionate ever written. Fall in love with this cult TV classic.

5. Independence Day

This movie never fails to get my heart racing (and is what we'll be watching later tonight). It has tears, humour, drama and action -- and the all important Happily Ever After (with fireworks and all!).

6. Major League

Surely the best of all the very American sports movies, this is sooo much fun and is must-watch if you've never seen it.

7. Star Trek First Contact

A stand alone film, prior knowledge of the Trekiverse is an advantage but not essential. A time-slip with an earth you'll recognise and one you won't, lots of action and patriotism wrapped in an awesome special effects bonanza!

6. Finally, The West Wing.

Surely the best of the American political dramas, this is one I watch on repeat. For a show that was written and filmed decades ago, I can't believe how current the content and issues remain. Great dialogue, incredibly loveable characters, and writing that will have you laughing and crying each episode, this is one you can't miss. (Sidenote, a lot of the cast has ended up over on The Good Fight - definitely a little breadcrumb for diehard fans).

Now for my favourite fried chicken recipe... Happy cooking! So, what's your favourite ever special-occasion/festive recipe? That you wait for all year round (and maybe not even - Christmas pudding in May, anyone else?)...

Sunday Smooch - Inherited for the Royal Bed, Annie West

Welcome to another LoveCats DownUnder Sunday Smooch!

Today we have a smooch from but first

... the winner of last week's Sunday Smooch Giveaway is PAMELA LOWERY

Can you please contact Kandy Shepherd at kandy(at)kandyshepherd.com to receive your copy of The Best Man and the Runaway Bride.

And now for today's Sunday Smooch from INHERITED FOR THE ROYAL BED. Don't forget, if you leave a comment you'll go in the draw to win a signed paperback copy of it! Here's a taste:

‘I now belong to you.’
He will finally claim his inheritance!
Four years after inheriting—and liberating—a concubine, powerful ruler Sayid is shocked to see the transformation of Lina. No longer shy and naive, she is a feisty, irresistible woman. And Sayid has never wanted anyone more! But, duty-bound to his country, Sayid can only commit to a brief affair. Will Lina accept his outrageous proposal of a week in the royal bed?

Scene set-up
Lina and Sayid met four years earlier when her family sent her to the palace as a gift for the Emir. Unlike the previous Emir, Sayid isn't thrilled to find a beautiful young innocent in his bedroom. Despite his instant attraction, honour overcomes lust and he sends her away. Now she's back, even more beautiful and distractingly disturbing and he can't get her out of his mind. Unable to sleep, he takes a midnight dip in the palace pool, only to run into Lina, literally, alone in the dark.

Smooch  -
‘Lina! Don’t look at me like that.’ The words ground from him, harsh and ragged.
Again that quick swipe of her bottom lip, as if her mouth was as dry as his.
‘Like what?’ Still she didn’t move away.
Sayid shook his head, determined to do the right thing as soon as he could unlock his hold on her arms.
Except she breathed deep and her breasts grazed him. A trail of fire rocketed through his ribs and abdomen, straight to his groin.
‘Like you want me to kiss you.’ He heard the rasp in his voice as duty battled desire, but she didn’t respond to that harsh warning.
She blinked up at him, her lips parted and slowly shook her head, her hair caressing him. Then her words, soft as the flutter of a nightingale’s wing, came to him. ‘But I do.’
The night stood still, except for his heart slamming his ribs and the saw of his breath, loud in the silence. Yet, hard as he fought, control was beyond him now.
A moment later his mouth captured hers.
*
Hard, callused hands grasped her tight. Sayid’s warm breath feathered her face. His rich, potent scent swirled within her as if she’d absorbed his essence. And above all, the press of his wet, hard body against hers devastated her senses in the most thrilling way.
Lina lifted her hands to his wet shoulders, relishing the strong bone, solid muscle and satiny skin beneath her questing hands.
Her daring surprised her, as if she made a habit of embracing men, when instead she’d spent years learning how to be friendly yet not encourage their advances.
Because, despite the stunning audacity of it, her heart, or perhaps her body, had fixed on Sayid Badawi as the only one she wanted. The one who, he’d made clear as he’d gently but firmly bundled her out of his bedroom and his life, was not for her. For of course he demanded sophistication and glamour, women who fitted his world of prestige and power.
This then was magic. A moment’s aberration.
An opportunity not to be missed. For too soon reality would end it.
Lina fell into his embrace. So long she’d imagined his mouth on hers. So long she’d pined for his touch. There was no holding back, no hesitation. And she discovered her imagination was a poor imitation of the real thing.
Being held by Sayid, kissed by him, made her head spin and her heart pound in delight. The taste of him, so rich, so…intimate, made her weak at the knees. Lina would have been completely overwhelmed except that it felt right.
His powerful arms dragged her up so that her breasts were crushed against that imposing, naked torso and she revelled in his strength, the urgency she sensed in him.
His lips were softer than she’d expected. But there was nothing tentative about his kiss. His tongue dived in, probing, licking and swirling. It inviting hers to curl in a dance of give and take that made her body prickle with a searing heat despite her damp swimsuit.
If being near Sayid was like being bathed in starlight, this was like being tossed up into the bright Milky Way itself.
She slipped her hands higher, combing them through the drenched hair at the back of his skull, spreading her fingers and cupping his head possessively.
If she could, she’d hold him here forever. Everyone knew magic was fleeting and she didn’t want this to end.
His hand dragged up her side, almost but not quite touching her breast and she shuddered. A second later that large hand planted itself on her cheek, angling her head higher as he bowed her back across his arm.
That combination of tenderness and mastery undid her.
With a great thump of her heart Lina abandoned any attempt at thought and let herself go, knowing Sayid wouldn’t let her fall. Everything his kiss demanded, she gave, revelling not just in the delicious new physical sensations, but her tangled, contrary feelings of power and helplessness.
When she pressed closer, slicking her tongue against his, he responded with a growl of pleasure deep in his throat that vibrated from his slick, hot body to hers. It made her quiver in delight.
She’d never felt so connected to another person. So… aroused. It was a heady new experience.
Liquid heat poured through her, pooling low in the centre of her body. Lina squirmed in his hold, trying to assuage the blind eagerness for more, more, more.
Then suddenly, devastatingly, it was over. Sayid’s hands gripped her upper arms, holding her steady as he straightened away from her.
His broad, bronzed chest rose and fell like overworked bellows. The furnace heat of his body encompassed her. But though she still tasted him on her tongue, her tingling lips couldn’t reach him and her hands had slipped from his head as he’d put her away from him.
Doubts assailed her. Regrets. Not for the kiss but because she hadn’t wanted it to end.
Hadn’t he enjoyed kissing her?

And of course the answer is YES. Sayid enjoyed it very much. He's having a difficult time letting her go.

I'm always interested in body language, behaviour and unspoken signals. So my question to you is, how do you know when someone is attracted? Is there something specific you've noticed (apart from the person telling you) when someone likes you? What do you notice about them?

Come back next Sunday, when the winner of today's giveaway will be announced and a smooch will be posted!
