HUGE Welcome Party for Two New Love Cats!

There have been some recent changes within the Love Cats. Two members have decided, for personal reasons, to become Cats in the Wild. Sharon Archer and Barbara De Leo have been lovely and long-standing members of the group and we're sorry to see them go. But we're looking forward to hearing about their adventures in the wild and to welcoming them back whenever they want to share their experiences.

With two Love Cats leaving that means two new Cats joining us here. We're absolutely delighted and chuffed to welcome Ally Blake and Melanie Milburne, both talented writers and lovely women! 

As you know, new Cats means it's time to PARTY! So get comfy and prepare to join us with the tipple of your choice (mine is champagne!) to celebrate Melanie and Ally's arrival. Ally, do you remember the first category romance you read? Is there a book (romance or otherwise) that made you want to become a writer?

Not the first but my first favourite.  “Enemy in Camp” by Janet Dailey.  Feisty blue-blood heroine, laconic blue-collar hero, lots of fun secondary characters (including a meddling little sister - very Philadelphia Story) and a lovely, rich, wry, heart-tugging romance.

It was such a stand out to me I still have the original copy.  The spine is falling apart; the pages are yellowed and brittle, and I often wonder if that hero helped shaped the heroes I write today.

There’s something warm and wonderful about the 30c price tag and store stamp from the ‘Book Swap’ shop where it was bought.  But I especially love that I discovered it amongst the trillion Mills and Boons my grandmother always kept under her spare bed.   For me writing category romance was meant to be – it was in my blood.

Is there a category romance you’ve read so far this year that that stands out for you?

Amy Andrews’ “Some Girls Do” (the free first book in her Outback Heat series) was an absolute blast.  Fun, fast and super sexy.   I also powered through a slew of Stefanie London’s fantastic romances.  I’ve been saving her bestselling “Pretend Its Love” for one of those rainy days when you NEED to curl up under a warm blanket and read something yummy.

What part of the writing process do you enjoy most?

Oh the blissful possibility of that perfect blank first page – when the story is a shining gem inside your mind; unblemished by human error, untwisted by characters who don’t act how you want them to, the purity as yet unveiled to the world.  The moment you write the very first word…it’s not longer yours.

Do you share your life with anyone furred, feathered or scaled? If so we’d love to hear about them.

You bet I do!  First a disclaimer. One of the many strings to my husband’s bow is professional snake catcher.  He’s also a licensed breeder of reptiles and has been since he was a kid.  So it’s no surprise that we live in a veritable menagerie.

In the past we’ve had black-headed pythons, blue tongued lizards, shingle backs and more.  The current state of affairs is relatively tame!

We have…a cat (Friday), a penny turtle (Cupcake), a half dozen chooks, and five aviaries filed with Kakariks (the sweetest, friendliest, chattiest little parrots that my husband breeds). And last Christmas holidays our lucky kids got their first dog.  Cookie is a Brittany Spaniel – a vivacious, adorable creature who wants nothing more on this earth than to snuggle, cuddle, sit on us, lick us, and love us.  Oh and cheese.  She reeeeally loves cheese.

Finally, can you share one fact about yourself we might not already know?

Ooooh.  Okay.  How about my favourite movie in the whole wide world?

Aliens.

I loved it so much when I was in my teens I sat down and wrote out EVERY WORD OF THE SCREENPLAY (and then discovered you can actually buy copies of the things – sigh). And it’s not all action and awesome one liners.  It’s romantic too.  It is!  The extended edition when Ripley is heading off to fight the big bad alien mumma, unsure if she’ll ever see badly injured (and terribly handsome) Hicks again and they share their first names for the first time…

Melanie, do you remember the first category romance you read? I read Kay Thorpe’s An Apple In Eden when I was seventeen and was totally hooked on category romance from that moment.

 Is there a book (romance or otherwise) that made you want to become a writer?

 I had always wanted to be a writer since I was a little girl, even before I began to read, as I loved stories so much. But it was reading Mary Stewart’s Nine Coaches Waiting (romantic suspense) when I was in my late teens that really made me dream of being a romance writer.

Is there a category romance you’ve read so far this year that that stands out for you?

This is going to sound really strange but I haven’t read a category romance in its entirety this year. I find it distracting to read category when I am on such a busy writing schedule (five to six books a year). I am always afraid of inadvertently borrowing phrases or being influenced by other author’s stories. I feel more comfortable reading other sub-genres of romance or crime or thriller and memoir and biography instead. But having said that, I do keep up to date with current trends in category romance and what the market wants.

What part of the writing process do you enjoy most?

 I love typing The End! I also love starting a new novel where the story idea is fresh and I’m in love with my characters and they haven’t yet started to annoy me by being difficult. But the whole process is wonderful. I love how things appear on the page as I’m typing that I hadn’t expected. It’s truly magical.

Do you share your life with anyone furred, feathered or scaled? If so we’d love to hear about them.

I have three miniature poodles: Polly, Lily and Gonzo. They are my writing and walking companions.  They do about twenty tricks now and I really enjoy teaching them new ones. I also have two cats: Matias and Mango. I am basically their butler! Matias is an Australian Long Hair and has the most placid personality. He and Gonzo adore each other. I have never seen a dog and cat have such a close and playful relationship.

 

Finally, can you share one fact about yourself we might not already know?

I used to school and break in horses when I was a teenager and young adult. And I have the aches and pains to prove it!

We have very exciting news! A brand new LoveCat has joined the pride here at LoveCats Downunder. And even more exciting is that it's the fabulous Stefanie London! Paws in the air!

LC: Hi Stefanie! We love to hear about animals here at the LoveCats. Can you tell us about a furry friend who's made their way into your heart?
 
I have to mention two furry friends here. Firstly, there's Romance Llama who an adorable stuffed Llama that travels around with me and sits at my writing desk. He was a gift from my husband on the sale of my first book, and since we're travelling a lot and have been living in an apartment for the last few years he's my substitute pet.

The other furry friend who's stolen my heart is my mum's dog, Cici (pronounced chi-chi). She's a gorgeous chihuahua-fox terrier cross that my mum and sister found at an animal shelter. She's got a few quirks because the shelter believe she was mistreated as a puppy, but she's the most loving, playful dog. She loves nothing more than curling up on on a lap or playing with her favourite squeaky chew toy. I love her to bits!

LC: Aw, look at that photo - Cici is gorgeous! If you could be any mythical animal, what would it be?

A Llamacorn. Half Llama, half unicorn. 100% magic.

LC: Very cool answer! Do you remember the first category book you read?

Unfortunately I don't. All I remember was that it was a Mills and Boon book that I 'borrowed' it from my mum's shelf and read it in secret. The hero and heroine got stuck in a storm and then were stranded together in a remote cabin. Cue sexy times! I would love to know what book it was so I could read it again, but sadly all my mum's old Mills and Boon books are long gone. 

LC: What about the last good category book you read?

I've read quite a few good category books so far this year. I really loved The Divorce Party by Jennifer Hayward, which was the winning book from Harlequin's So You Think You Can Write competition last year. It had everything I look for in a Presents book - drama, a dark and powerful hero, lots of conflict, glamour and angst. I also really loved Uncovered by Love by Madeline Ash, an Australian romance writer. She has such a way with words, her books have this lovely, dreamy quality and yet the conflicts are so deep and real. Her characters really leap off the page. She's definitely one to watch!

LC: What's one category book on your TBR pile that you're looking forward to?

There are SO MANY to choose from! Honestly, my TBR pile is out of control. If I had to pick one I'd say Triple Threat by Regina Kyle which is coming out with Harlequin Blaze next month. This is Regina's debut and I know her from when we were both unpublished authors chatting on the Harlequin forums, she got 'the call' not long after me and I'm so thrilled to be able to read her book. Best of all, like me she loved the arts world and has set her book around a Broadway play.

The sad moment of this party is as we wave goodbye to three Cats - Natalie Anderson left a couple of months ago, and you might have seen her farewell post. Now, to get to know our new Cats a little better, I've asked them some probing questions:

1. Who is your Catwalk candidate?

Yvonne Lindsay

Amy:  My 10 year old black lab Fonzie. He’s almost one hundred percent blind now due to epilepsy but he still loves to chase his special ball and anything else you want to throw for him. If it doesn’t bounce near his ear he has no hope of finding it but it doesn’t stop him from bringing us stuff to throw and he loves to run around! I swear he’s still a puppy sometimes!

Jennifer: My cute little catwalk candidate is our Cavoodle puppy, Toffee.

Yvonne: Dobbie the Little Black Cat (she’s my precious!).

2. If you could be any imaginary animal, what would it be?

Amy: I think it’d be kind of cool to be a unicorn. In my imagination they live in a world of rainbows and peace which sounds pretty damn good to me!

Jennifer: One that could fly.  I'm terrified of flying and it would be great to be in control when I soar up into the sky!

Yvonne: I think I’d be a Celtic Dragon.


3. What was the first category book you read?

Amy: Don’t remember but it would have been by either Carole Mortimer,  Anne Mather or Charlotte Lamb.

Jennifer: Wow, I can't remember!  But I can remember the very first Blaze I read - Can't Get Enough by Sarah Mayberry.  Love Sarah's writing!

Yvonne: Ooh, good heavens, how can I remember back that far! I was 13! I do know my reading was influenced by New Zealand authors, Robyn Donald, Daphne Clair and Susan Napier over the years.


4. What's the last great category book you read?

Amy: Oh, not fair...loved Sarah Mayberry’s self-published Her Best Worst Mistake.

Jennifer: I'm currently reading and loving Mr Right At The Wrong Time by Nikki Logan.


Yvonne: Last great category book I read was Louisa George’s The War Hero’s Locked Away Heart. I loved how Louisa created very real characters with very real and believable conflict. Fabulous story!


5. What's something we wouldn’t know about you?

Amy: I don’t like peanut butter.

Jennifer: When I was in my early twenties, I launched Guinness beer into Russia.  We held the launch in a pub around the corner from the Kremlin.  I had to organise everything through a translator as I don't speak a word of Russian.  When the launch wrapped and all the journalists, photographers and TV crews left, I walked out into snowy, minus 20 degree Red Square and felt a little like Anna Karenina (minus all the tragedy, infidelity, jealousy, nineteenth century costumes...).

Yvonne: That’s a tricky one…I’d tell you but then it wouldn’t be a secret anymore.

Party Planning Possessed!

The Party Planner heroine has been in vogue for some time and I totally know why. It’s a most fun way to spend a day!

Yeah, I was going to write about the creative power of H2O today, but I find my life has been consumed by planning my 7 year old's party which is on Saturday...

This is basically a major form of avoidance – we’re moving towns next week and I’m supposed to be decluttering the house so when the packers arrive on Wednesday I’ve gotten rid of all the unnecessary and all the rubbish. It’s an awful, overwhelming job – because we have too much STUFF. And it is so much more fun surfing the Internet and coming up with groovy games and tricky clues for a Scooby Doo mystery…

with their initials on the back - even though I can't sew! 
I had to take the borrowed machine to 
the shop to get them to thread it for me...

Scooby is a perennial favourite – all my kids and their mates love him, so do most the adults I talk to. There’s something about the lovable, perennially hungry hound who’s a big chicken and a hero all at the same time.
So we’ve got ourselves a mystery to solve with a Birthday Phantom trying to steal the presents, a giant Scooby poster in which to ‘pin the tag on Scooby’, balloon Monsters to Mash, a Witch to wash away with water bombs and so on… Yes, it’s all totally over the top and I’m probably having more fun planning than the kids actually will at the party, but hey, I need the fun right now!

My biggest remaining concern is the cake – I think I’m going to try and create a Scooby face using fondant icing… yes, definitely tipping into mad territory. But then I am the woman who stayed up all night in my hospital room down the corridor from my newborn twins’ ICU unit, icing a cake into a penguin for my eldest who was turning four the next day. The nurses thought I was crackers. I think I probably was – but that’s hormones for you and the maternal drive to do whatever for their child – I didn’t want Miss 4 to miss out on her fun cake and party just because her newborn twin sisters had just upstaged (and pretty much upended) her life!

But after the penguin, I ‘outsourced’ the kids’ parties for a while – gym parties, museum parties, yes – McDonald’s parties… so all I had to provide was the cake. It was just easier when I had so many young kids. So Scooby is the first party the boy has had a home for a few years and he specially requested a party at home, with some kind of a treasure hunt and for it to all be a surprise for him. No pressure then! ;)

And I have to admit, after the running around today finding masks and making spooky decorations, I’m not sure I’d want party planning as a full-time job – the pressure to come up with something new/bigger/better/bolder every time and being able to meet the party-goers expectations every time… oh wait a minute, that sounds a tad like writing romance novels! – Getting more creative, coming up with new while meeting the expectations??? Hmmm!!! No wonder we writers can identify with that career!!! What about you readers - is party planning a fun career choice to read about?

Leah worked with an editor after winning the Harlequin Mills & Boon New Voices Competition in November 2010, and was offered a contract on February 25th, 2011. Her first book, Secrets & Speed Dating, will be published as Mills & Boon Riva/Sweet/Romance and will be released in the UK in October this year, and in the US and Australia in 2012.

Before we got to down to business, we asked Leah our fun NewCat questions!

Leah's Pointer, Stella

Favourite animal?
Horses. I was a horse mad kid that grew up to be a horse mad adult. Sadly I had to sell my horse in 2005 as I just didn't have the time to commit to riding and competing any longer.

Favourite mythical animal?
Unicorn (see above :) ).

First category book you read?
The first one I remember absolutely adoring was Gina Wilkin's "A Stroke of Genius" that I bought secondhand as a teenager and kept hidden at the back of my bookcase. It went missing when I moved out of home and I'm still searching for a replacement copy.

Last great category book you read?
Anything by Sarah Mayberry or Nikki Logan - although I also really enjoyed Mira Lyn Kelly's Front Page Affair.

Something we wouldn't know about you?
That I'm getting married in less than four weeks!

And now on a more serious note... can you tell us a bit about your journey through the New Voices program with Harlequin and on to the exciting moment that you were offered a contract.

The New Voices competition was such an amazing opportunity that I absolutely had to enter - despite the nausea inducing reality that The Whole World would be able to read my entry. With this competition, there was nowhere to hide!

I purposefully entered something completely new to New Voices, so I wouldn't be too attached to it when it (inevitably) crashed and burned. When it didn't, and I made the Top Ten, it was such a shock! It also made the next two rounds just that little bit harder, as I had absolutely no idea what would happen next.

But with lots of help from my lovely mentors - editor Meg Lewis and author Jessica Hart - as well as my writing friends (a particularly huge thank you to Lovecat Nikki Logan) I made it through Round Two (Chapter Two) and then my final round entry of a pivotal moment from my book won the competition. Winning the competition was one of the most amazing things to have ever happened to me, and I am so grateful for every single person who entered the competition, and everyone who voted.

New Voices itself was a huge amount of pressure and stress, but it utterly paled in comparison to writing the rest of my book. The full story is on my blog (trust me, it's long!). The short version is that I threw out my half finished book - twice - before I finally got it right. My editor, Meg, was incredible, and kept her faith in me, even when privately, I wasn't so sure.

What I learnt was that I have to listen to my gut when I write, and I have to write the story that resonates with me. Consequently you'll see that the New Voices version of Secrets & Speed Dating is very different to the finished book - but a much better book for it, I think. Once I let go of trying to write the rest of the New Voices entry, and instead decided to just write Sophie and Dan's story, it all (finally!) fell into place.
