Who has time for hobbies?

With life so busy, I find it hard to dedicate time to hobbies. When is there a spare minute in the day to dabble in something that a dictionary defines as ‘an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure’? Sad really. Isn’t life supposed to have some time for pleasure?

Well, I have been forced, well not really forced, but encouraged back into one of my hobbies recently. My parents are downsizing so my mother’s grand piano has come to me.  It is such a beautiful, elegant instrument. I can’t believe it now sits in my sitting room.

Now, I used to play piano quite well. In fact at one point I was tossing up whether to go to university or to the conservatorium of music. However, I attended enough eisteddfods to know I was never going to be good enough to be a world-class concert pianist.  Me being me, if I wasn’t going to do it perfectly, I wasn’t going to do it at all (I have matured a little since then). So, I stopped cold turkey and didn’t play for nearly twenty-five years!

Me playing a Steinway (!!!) at the Bangalow Hall
Then, about a year ago, Mum and I were discussing her move to a smaller home and she said, ‘The grand will be yours.’ Well, I had to deserve the instrument, didn’t I; so back to piano lessons I went.

I completed my grade five exam through Trinity College last Thursday. I believe I did okay. I did muck up a couple of sections in my pieces that I’d never mucked up before which was pretty frustrating, but I’m trying hard not to be too much of a perfectionist and enjoy the process (I read somewhere that that was important).

It’s so nice to be able to play again. Nice to have a hobby that is so vastly different to everything else I do in my day.

Do you have a hobby you love or one you’d love to try but still haven’t had a change to jump into?  I’d love to hear all about it.

Blurb
Heiress Lady Zara Ravensdale and Xavier Hunt, the gardener's son, were once inseparable. But before their romance had a chance to bloom, it was crushed by scandal and betrayal.

Xavier is now an international celebrity and sexier than sin while Zara is deep in debt, running Ravensdale Manor as an upmarket hotel to make ends meet. Unable to forget the past, Xavier returns to the manor, determined to exact his revenge on the Ravensdale family – once and for all.

Together again, passions reignite and the old chemistry becomes impossible to ignore. But Xavier and Zara are both keeping secrets and neither can forget their troubled history. Will they be able to uncover the truth of that night or will Xavier's need for revenge tear them apart forever?

The Billionaire's Passionate Revenge is the third book in the Billionaire series.

Scene set-up
Xavier has just won a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) award for his gardening television series. Zara accompanied him to the gala awards night and an awards after-party. They have just arrived back at their hotel after a passionate smooch was interrupted by a group of Xavier's fans. So this scene is really a post-smooch and a prelude to another but I just love the teasing mood in this scene. I hope you enjoy.

Smooch  -

They arrived at their floor and he unlocked the door to the royal suite. She stepped into the marble foyer and marvelled again at the amazing space. She’d read that the suite had recently been renovated to the tune of two and half million pounds, and every penny spent was exhibited in its luxury appointments.

‘This has been such a magical night, Xavier.’

He took her hand and led her into the living room. ‘You speak as though the night is already over, whereas I’m thinking, beautiful suite, more champagne, dim lights . . .’

Her heart beat a little faster.

‘So you sit right here,’ he said. ‘And I’ll order some room service.’

She sat, sinking onto the cream sofa. Xavier strode to the desk. The man looked incredible in his Alexander McQueen tuxedo, the outfit so different to his usual attire of jeans and T-shirt.

He stripped off the jacket and threw it over a chair, his broad shoulders barely contained by the classic white shirt. Picking up the phone, he ordered champagne and chocolates.

Something buzzed beside her. She forced her gaze in that direction. A mobile phone hummed. Must be Xavier’s. He mustn’t have taken it with him to the ceremony. She picked it up and held it for Xavier to see. He nodded and finalised the order. She glanced at the scene and her eyes widened. Fifty-three missed calls.

She pushed off the sofa. ‘Xavier, you have over fifty missed calls.’ It buzzed in her hand again and she read the caller ID. ‘Julia Templeton,’ she announced holding out the phone to him.

‘That’s my assistant.’ He took the phone gently from her hand and returned it to the coffee table. ‘I’ll call her in the morning.’

The screen lit up again. Another call.

‘But there must be something important going on,’ she insisted. People calling at two in the morning never brought good news. The muscles in her neck tightened. She’d learned that from experience.

‘It’ll just be people calling to congratulate me.’ He slipped his arm about her waist, touching his lips to hers. ‘They can all wait. We’ve got more important priorities.’

Zara glanced down at the screen. ‘But that’s Julia calling again, and it’s the middle of the night. Assistants don’t do that unless it’s important.’

Xavier was still for a moment. ‘Later,’ he said again, kissing the line of her jaw. But she couldn’t move her mind from the phone and all those missed calls.

‘Please, Xavier.’ She pushed him firmly from her body. ‘Just call her back, make sure everything is okay and then I can relax.’

He looked down at her, an amused expression on his face. ‘Well, anything to make you happy.’
‘It would.’

He picked up his phone. The tension in her neck eased.

‘I’ll only call her back if you go into that bedroom and slip into something more comfortable.’

She smiled. ‘Your wish is my command.’ She turned and presented him with her back. ‘Unzip me,’ she asked in her best sultry voice.

His fingers touched the sensitive nape of her neck. The spicy tang of his aftershave teased her nostrils. He drew the zip down her back, oh so slowly, trailing his fingers over her skin. She sucked in a breath. His hands glided onto her shoulders to slip the dress from her body. She stopped him and turned.

‘Call first, then I’m all yours.’

‘You really are trying to kill me.’ The rise and fall of his chest showed he was already breathing hard.

Walking into the bedroom, she could feel Xavier’s gaze tracking her movements. Turning, their eyes met. He stepped forward.

‘No,’ she said, holding up her hand. ‘Good things come to those who wait.’ She allowed her dress to drop to the floor, giving Xavier a glimpse of her standing simply in her strapless black bra, knickers, stockings and high heels, before she pulled the door closed behind her.

An anguished groan sounded from beyond the door. She smiled and ran her hands down her body. He’d better be quick with that call.

Release Day Nerves

It's release week for The Billionaire's Passionate Revenge and the nerves are building.  Fortunately a couple of five-star reviews have popped up already on goodreads, but it doesn't stop the 'will people enjoy it' jitters.

I loved writing this book. It's the third book in my Billionaire Romance series. This book is a bit of a departure from the other two as it is set almost exclusively in the heroine’s ancestral home, Ravensdale Manor in Devon, England. The other two books in the series, The Billionaire’s Pursuit of Love and Tempted by the Billionaire Tycoon, feature trips to exotic, glamorous locations like Brunei and Paris. Although, in Billionaire #3 there is a spicy trip to London that plays out in a gorgeous suite at The Savoy. I love that hotel.

I based Ravensdale Manor on the many stately homes I visited when I lived in England. I loved heading out from London on weekends and exploring English history. Visiting place like Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, or Blenheim Palace, the birthplace and ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill, just fantastic.

Xavier’s character has been in my head for at least five years.  I’m thrilled I’ve finally got him out on the page. I have to admit I’m a little in love with him. He’s suffered so much tragedy and betrayal but gets up and keeps going. I love his determination, passion and his incredible kindness. And Zara. She’s in big, big trouble, but you’ll have to read all about it to find out why!

Here's a taste. The hero Xavier has come to stay at Ravensdale Manor, the heroine Zara family home which she has had to convert into a hotel to pay the bills. The garden is in a mess and Xavier has helped sort out the an ornamental garden bed (he's a celebrity gardener)

Excerpt:

Zara opened the French doors and walked across the lawn. The closer she came, the wider her eyes grew. The garden bed looked as if it could win gold in the Chelsea Flower Show. The tangle of weeds was now a mass of reds, yellows, creams and oranges, bordered by tiny blue flowers. Gorgeous. No wonder wealthy Americans flocked to Xavier’s landscape design business.

Her eyes strayed from Xavier’s handiwork to his muscled shoulders flexing under a white cotton shirt. She paused. The sweat-stained fabric gave extra definition to the glory that lay beneath. She grazed her teeth over her bottom lip. All that physical labour and an outdoor lifestyle had given Xavier the body of a god. Sculpted, tanned and hot. So unbelievably hot.

‘You just going to stand there, or come over for a proper look?’ Xavier called without looking up.

Her pulse spiked. God. Had he caught her gawking?

She strode forward as though she hadn’t been sprung ogling. ‘Xavier, this is incredible,’ she breathed.

He rocked back on his heels and threw her a killer smile. Her belly performed a little fluttery dance.

‘Not too bad for a couple of hours’ effort,’ he said, casting a critical eye over his work.

She moved to the far end of the garden to appreciate the splendour from another angle.

‘How did you do this?’ she asked.

‘Nothing a quick run to the local nursery couldn’t fix.’ Xavier’s brow creased. ‘But it’s not finished yet.’

‘What are you talking about?’ She bent down and smelled a gorgeous scarlet flower. ‘What else do you need to do? It’s perfect.’

‘Needs to be watered in and mulched. I’ll do it after lunch.’

He stood and pulled off his gardening gloves and dropped them on the grass. Stripping off his shirt, he wiped it across his sweat-glistening chest. She sucked in a quick breath. The physical nature of his job was evident in his perfectly defined muscles and golden skin.

‘I . . . I can water it,’ she said, trying to focus on the floral display and not his delicious body and the effect it was having on her own. ‘You’re supposed to be writing your book.’

‘You!’ he exclaimed, drawing his arm across his brow, giving her a beautiful view of taut muscle. She ran her tongue across her dry lips.

‘I want the garden to live,’ he quipped. ‘If you step any closer, these flowers will wilt with fright.’

Zara thrust her hands on her hips. ‘I’m not that bad.’

‘Oh no,’ he said with a laugh wrapped up with irony. ‘You just have that magic touch for turning everything green into a nice shade of brown.’

He flicked his finger down her nose. A teasing gesture from their childhood. His simple, intimate touch sent a quiver of delight through her veins. God, she’d missed him. Missed this. Having someone who knew her so well. Someone who knew her inadequacies and found them endearing. Someone who knew the dull pain of grief that never left.

‘Just because I couldn’t grow anything then doesn’t mean I’m a rubbish gardener now.’

‘Oh yes.’ He grinned. ‘I can see how well the place has fared under your gentle touch,’ he said, sweeping his hand around to encompass the almost derelict garden.

‘Hey.’ She slapped his arm. ‘I only took over managing this place six months ago when Dad had to go into care. It takes time and love to build something special.’

A spark of merriment flashed in his eyes. ‘Read that somewhere, did you?’

She swallowed. Oh God. She had. In his latest gardening volume. She couldn’t believe she’d quoted his lines back to him.

‘Ah . . .’

‘Chapter one, page ten of my latest book,’ he said, rubbing his temple in an exaggerated fashion. ‘If I’m not mistaken.’

The Billionaire's Passionate Revenge is the third book in the Billionaire series.

Scene set-up

Zara fell ill just days before she was to host a charity Fair at her ancestral family home, Ravensdale Manor. Xavier stepped in to complete the final preparations so the event didn't fail. After all, the charity was for a very worthy cause. But was his hard work only for the charity or was there something else at play?

Smooch

‘I think you’ll find that the stables are now satisfactory for the charity auction,’ Xavier said.

He hauled open the heavy wooden doors, his muscles tensing and bunching under his T-shirt. She held herself tight, to stop herself reaching out and running her hands over those gorgeous shoulders.

‘Your new exhibition space,’ he announced with a flourish.

She stepped inside. Her eyes took a moment to adjust to the dim light. She’d explained to the fair organisers that the space would still be rather rustic but clean.

Slowly, the transformation of the space became clear. She gasped, staring, eyes wide. Xavier turned on the lights and the reality of what he’d achieved in three days was revealed. An electric tingle ran down her arms and her hands flew to her chest.

Whitewashed walls, a freshly laid wooden floor, pearly-white down lights that directed the light into all the right spaces. The beautiful old beams had been sanded back, taking off hundreds of years of muck, and had been finished with a beautiful golden stain. The natural beauty of the ancient wood shone, highlighted against the simple white walls. The old grimy stables were now better appointed than the local art gallery.

‘How . . . What . . . How . . .’ She didn’t even know what questions to ask.

He took her hand and walked her to the middle of the room.

‘Well, I was going to do what you’d planned. Clean it out and whitewash the walls, but it had so much potential. I couldn’t stop at a little paint. So I drew up some plans and called in some help.

She turned slowly around and around, drinking in the changes. Xavier had perfectly blended the old-world charm of the building with modern features. It must have cost a fortune.

The heavy pressure of panic settled on her chest. ‘Xavier, I can’t afford this.’

He held both her hands. ‘Don’t worry. I’ve got it covered.’

‘But . . . why would you do this?’ she asked weakly, not believing it was all real.

‘Well, we couldn’t let the kids down and you were sick, so. . . .’

Pure love flooded her heart. She threw her arms about his neck and hugged him tight. How could she ever have doubted this man?

‘Thank you. Thank you.’

This was her Xavier. The man she’d loved. Surely this must clear the slate of his teenage misdemeanours. He was honourable. He was ethical. He was trustworthy.

His arms circled her waist, bringing her body flush with his. So close. So close she could feel the beat of his heart. Her breath stalled.

He drew her closer. This was no friendly hug. The light caress of his breath stroked her neck. He brushed his cheek against the sensitive skin beneath her ear, then his lips followed. Fire blazed through her bloodstream. She drew in a stuttering breath.

‘Xavier,’ she whispered, her voice already altered with desire.

‘Say it again. Say my name again.’

His demand drove beads of desire deep, down low. Hell, she wanted to scream his name.

‘Xavier,’ she breathed, her lips close to his ear.

His body shuddered and he trailed kisses down her collarbone. She ran her fingers through his hair.

He straightened. The rings around his irises looked like molten gold, his eyes smouldering with want.

‘Now say you want me,’ he commanded.

His words sent a shiver of raw desire straight to her core. Zara placed her palms on his cheeks and drew his face in close to hers. The scent of cloves and raw masculinity assailed her nostrils. She dragged in a breath, dizzy with need. Her body demanded to be touched.

‘I’ve never stopped wanting you.'
