Five things making me happy this week.

It's been a tough few weeks in the DeLeo household. Both patriarchs on each side of our family are fighting big battles and although we're trying to stay very positive it's been a tough road. It's at times like this that counting blessings and remembering all the things that bring us joy is so very important. I thought I'd share a few of the things that have brought a smile to my face this week.

Modern Family

I watch very little T.V these days. What with the day job and the kids and books to write I don't even visit the TV room most days - except for Thursday nights. On Thursday nights I laugh until my side aches and it can be the best medicine of them all. Last summer we took series 1-4 to the beach house and watched them back to back for a week and I can't tell you how much fun it was. Even if Rachel Bailey says I remind her A LOT of Claire, I just love this family to bits. If you haven't got acquainted yet, do yourself a favour...

Salted Caramel

In truth, I'd probably eat salted caramel cotton wool if they made it. It's one of those flavours that shouldn't possibly work but does. I've discovered this packet of gold this week. It only lasted until Tuesday....

Liane Moriarty's Books

There are certain authors whose books I'll autobuy. Doesn't matter what the blurb says, or the reviews, or the price. Liane Moriarty is one of those authors for me. She writes women's fiction rather than romance but there's something about her communities, the way she writes about relationships that I just love.

Last Chance Proposal

My Christmas book "Last Chance Proposal" is on sale for 99c this week and it's has had four lovely five star reviews!

This crazy bunch

At the end of a tough week it's lovely to come home to these crazy cats.

What's made you smile this week?

Tēnā koutou katoa! - Celebrating who we are.

Yesterday was our national day in New Zealand. Waitangi Day celebrates the signing of the treaty of Waitangi between indigenous Maori tribes and the English Crown in 1840, and it's a day for us to reflect on what makes us New Zealanders. But we're a funny lot us kiwis, we're often a little shy about showing our national colours and we don't go in for a lot of pomp and ceremony. What we tend to do instead is have the day in the sun with friends and whānau (family) getting back to nature.

Yesterday my friend Heather and I continued our little tradition of trying to pack the day full with as many things as possible that define us as New Zealanders.

First, we took our kids to a gorgeous part of the country, the Marlborough Sounds. Here there are endless waterways, peaceful New Zealand bush and people having fun in and on the water. Here is our little picnic site all set up.

Next, the challenge was to eat as many New Zealand's favourite foods as possible. Of course we started off with snacks - that's my Jay introducing you to Lemon and Paeroa (L and P) a yummy lemony fizzy drink, Kiwi Dip made with dried onion soup and reduced cream (tastes MUCH better than it sounds!), pumpkin and kumara (sweet potato) dip  and Bluebird chips.

The rule for the day was that we could only eat New Zealand food and listen to New Zealand music. Here are two or our favourites - the fabulous Lorde, and one by my gorgeous friend (and godfather to my youngest) Tama Waipara. I love the way Tama includes so much New Zealand imagery in his music.

After a swim (and doing "bombs" off the jetty) it was time for lunch— first there was bacon and egg pie, sausage rolls and Watties tomato sauce....

and finally a whole lot of kiwi goodness....pavlova with kiwifruit, mallow puffs, jaffas, jet planes and pineapple lumps.

The day came to a close with a drive home on our notoriously windy roads, with everyone already planning on more kiwi delights for next year.

How do you celebrate your national day?

Sunday Smooch - Barbara DeLeo

Welcome to another LoveCats DownUnder Sunday Smooch!

Today we have a smooch from  Barbara DeLeo's brand new release Last Chance Proposal

Blurb:
Cy Hathaway needs a wife, fast, to win custody of his son, Jonty. He returns home to discover the childhood sweetheart he once left behind has become a vibrant, beautiful woman. Even though wanting to sweep her off her feet wasn't part of the plan…

For Ellie, Cy's sudden reappearance awakens a flood of memories—and resentments for the way he’d abandoned her all those years ago. But she has a life now, a career. She can't simply drop everything and get hitched, even if the sight of him still makes her heart race.

But after Ellie meets his little boy, she can't refuse. Certain she has a grip on her old feelings for Cy, she agrees to marry her first love until he gains custody. But when did helping out a friend become something with the capacity to hijack her heart?

Set-up:
To Cy's relief, Ellie has finally said yes to his "last chance proposal". They've negotiated the contract, discussed the terms, but he can't help the building connection he feels to her. But he has to be careful, if he hurts Ellie again, he could lose his last chance to be with his son.

It's Christmas Eve and they've opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate their new contract but things start to change

Smooch:

He watched her mouth, champagne-moist, and took a swig of his own, the cool, fizzing liquid stinging his throat as he swallowed. “You haven’t changed at all.”

She put her mouth to the glass but kept her eyes on his and something punched him way down deep.

It was a lie, and she knew it.

Instead of the young and vulnerable girl he used to know, now a strong and independent—sexy—woman sat before him. She swallowed her mouthful and the smooth movement of liquid sliding down her throat drew his stare to her slender neck and the vanilla skin shimmering there. He’d kissed that skin once and could remember the sweet taste of it. But what would it taste like now? Now that she was a woman who’d no doubt had a number of lovers, a woman who’d know what she wanted. Back then she’d been comfortable, safe. She’d changed all right, more than he’d thought  possible, and it was playing hell with his focus.

“I’d like to have changed,” she said softly, snapping him out of his thoughts.

“Why?”

She took another mouthful of the wine and slowly swirled it around her mouth, the sultry movement of her lips mesmerizing him.

Hot need beat down low and he crunched his stomach muscles tight. No. He couldn’t. Wouldn’t. If he got too close to Ellie right now, he’d end up hurting her and screwing with Jonty’s life. He wouldn’t let either of those things happen. When the custody was assured, it would be a different story. Then he could put his energies into winning her back for real.

“If I’d changed, I wouldn’t be scared anymore.”

He tried, but he couldn’t make himself look past her. He set his glass on the polished tabletop and thought he heard her take a deeper breath.

Moving to get up, she knocked her glass from the table with her elbow. It smashed in a thousand pieces on the floor, the tinkle echoing around the room like a choir. Startled, she stood and took a step toward him and, unthinkingly, he reached for her.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

Her eyes were wide and infinite. Only inches away.

“What wouldn’t you be scared of if…you’d changed?” he whispered, his mind spinning.

Her tongue ran across her bottom lip, and then she drew it between her teeth before releasing it. “Not scared of failing people. Not scared that if I didn’t do the right thing, somebody would take the things I love away.” She looked away from him. The meaning beneath her words scrambled in his ears. Did she still love him? God, his brain was so heated he wasn’t sure. Hadn’t she only agreed to marry him to pay him back for the secret he’d kept for her? Leaning closer, his throat closed, but his senses stood to attention and he smothered the warning in his head.

“Would you be scared of what would happen if I kissed you now?” He rasped the words out but instead of leaning into him, she stayed there, inches away, looking directly into his face and sending fingers of heat through him.

He stayed rigid, knowing this shouldn’t happen, that he’d been tempted once before by her and didn’t follow through. One kiss wouldn’t be enough… Looking down at the chestnut waves of her hair, her perfect nose, and the pout of her lips, every cell in his body ached to be nearer. Her amber eyes sparked as he reached out and traced the soft skin of her cheek.

His head told him to stay where he was, not to bend and remove the inch it would take for his lips to touch hers, that this was  madness. His body had other ideas.

An explosion of need ripped through him and he claimed her mouth with his own. The pressure of her lips against his was sweetly firm. Her breath whispered softly across his face, her palms pressed against his chest before she pulled back, leaving them both gasping for air.

There was nothing comfortable or safe about Ellie Jacobs anymore, and it scared the living daylights out of him.

The anticipation is KILLING me!

I'm full of anticipation for my latest release on Monday. I'm excited because this is my first book for a whole new imprint, anxious because I'm wondering how my existing readers will like this different direction, and head-over-heels delighted that this book is finally about to be let out into the big wide world.

Want a peek? Here's the cover and blurb.

A wife he needs. The woman he desires.

Cy Hathaway needs a wife, fast, to win custody of his son, Jonty. He returns home to discover the childhood sweetheart he once left behind has become a vibrant, beautiful woman. Even though wanting to sweep her off her feet wasn’t part of the plan…

For Ellie, Cy’s sudden reappearance awakens a flood of memories—and resentments for the way he’d abandoned her all those years ago. But she has a life now, a career. She can’t simply drop everything and get hitched, even if the sight of him still makes her heart race.

But after Ellie meets his little boy, she can’t refuse. Certain she has a grip on her old feelings for Cy, she agrees to marry her first love until he gains custody. But when did helping out a friend become something with the capacity to hijack her heart?

This feeling like I'm holding my breath, watching the clock as the big day draws near, reminds me of another time in my life when the big day couldn't come quick enough...

We always went to my Grandparents farm for Christmas. Tradition was inherent in everything we did, from the way we hung the Christmas lights to the time we were allowed up on Christmas morning.

We have a rule for my four kids that they can't come in to us before 6 on Christmas morning, but many a time we've been worn down by the pleading looks and the loud whispers about what Santa might have brought them. Anticipation seems to be contagious!

So, what are you looking forward to this holiday season?
