Passion sets sail in USA TODAY bestselling author Rachel Bailey's tale of high-stakes inheritance

Never be distracted by a woman is hotel magnate Luke Marlow's golden rule, especially when the woman just inherited half his late uncle's luxury cruise liner. But ship's doctor Della Walsh is the exception. Her dignified beauty ignites Luke's desire despite his suspicions. Even so, he will gain full control of the ship at all costs.

For Della, the ship has been a sanctuary. Now she has just three weeks to change Luke's mind and save the ship—until passion comes along and steers them off course….

[Scene set-up: Della has spent the day showing Luke the facilities on board the Cora Mae, and now they're on the deck in the moonlight, trying to avoid their attraction...]

He looked up to the stars and a flash of movement caught his attention. Within an instant he was beside Della, one arm around her waist, pointing skyward. “Shooting star.”

“Oh,” she said on a long breath, her gaze following his finger.

The feel of her against him was mesmerizing. Absorbed in the moment, she’d forgotten to be on her guard and allowed her soft curves to meld into his side, her head resting back on his shoulder as she tracked the star’s path.

“Make a wish,” he murmured beside her ear.

A kiss. In this moment, all he wanted was to turn her to face him, to lean down and touch her sweet lips with his. It was wrong, he knew it was wrong, but the blood in his veins thundered and a delicious heat began to rise.

The star faded and the night sky again grew still, the only movement the ship’s steady forward progress and the gentle breeze that danced in Della’s hair. But she didn’t move away. Part of him dared not move and break the spell, but the larger, rebellious part of him—surrounded by the scent of vanilla and woman—risked inclining his head down to hers, and was rewarded when she shivered.

“Like to know what I wished for?” he said, voice low.

Her eyes drifted shut. “You’re not supposed to tell. It won’t come true if you do.”

“Maybe,” he said, his mouth so close to her ear that his lips brushed her lobe as he spoke. “But if you knew what the wish was, perhaps you’d grant it.”

He pressed a light kiss on her neck, just below her ear. Della held herself still but didn’t pull away. “I don’t have any magical powers to grant wishes.”

“I’m not so sure.” He pressed another kiss to her soft skin, this one at the edge of her jaw.

As he cupped the side of her throat with one hand, he felt her racing pulse and turned her to face him. A small sound of protest passed her lips even as she leaned in and placed the lightest of kisses on his mouth. It took everything inside him, but he locked his muscles tight and didn’t move an inch. Della had held herself back so much, he wouldn’t ruin this by pushing too far, too fast. Instead, he waited for excruciating seconds for her to come back to him. Her warm breath caressed his face as she looked from his mouth to his eyes, fighting some inner struggle. Then she tilted her head forward and stole another butterfly kiss, and again, he gently moved his lips but nothing else, despite the protests of his straining body.

Her scent curled around his thoughts, leaving little reason in its wake, but he held firm until she tipped her chin up for a third time. Now, her lips were more confident and she wound her arms up around his neck. That was all the permission he needed, all the permission he could wait for. With a groan, he pulled her in.

He deepened the kiss, tasting her, needing to be close, connected to her. Holding her flush against him with the hand she’d stitched, he traced a path over the curve of her spine with the other, down over her hip, back up to feel the swell of the side of her breast. He’d wanted her from the moment she’d first appeared like an angel from the crowd on the deck the day he’d boarded, but now, he craved her with an urgency that rocked him. His body was ablaze; the kiss was nowhere near enough. Her fingers wound up into his hair and dug into his scalp, her mouth demanding against his.

“Della,” he rasped as he wrenched his mouth away to drag some oxygen into his lungs.

She stilled and looked up at him with eyes that were suddenly alert…and stunned.

“It’s okay,” he whispered as he rubbed a thumb over her damp bottom lip.

She unwound her arms from his neck and let them fall to her sides. “No, it’s not.” She said the words quietly, almost to herself, her eyes averted. Then she drew in a deep breath and met his gaze. “Luke, you don’t want to do this.”

He almost laughed at how far that was from the truth. “I can tell you that my body disagrees in the most strenuous of terms.”

“That’s because it’s under a misapprehension.”

“What would that be?” he murmured as he skimmed his fingers down her spine to the dip in her lower back, trying to bring the two of them back to the place they’d been only moments earlier.

For a full second, her eyes darkened in response to his caress, before she blinked the effect away. “Your body thinks there’s a chance this will go further.”

“Hate to be the one to break it to you,” he said lazily, “but your body agrees with mine.”

Tell me, have you ever wished upon a shooting star? I've tried, but I've never been quite fast enough. Whether you've been able to or not, I'll be giving away a copy of The Local All-Star Anthology, which includes Countering His Claim, to one commenter.

Countering His Claim is still available as an eBook in the US, Australia and NZ, as well as other parts of the world, and in paperback in some places. The Local All-Star Anthology will be on the bookshop shelves in Australia and NZ in October.

Come back next Sunday, when the winner of today's giveaway will be announced -- and a smooch from a gorgeous Amy Andrews book will be posted!

Sailing Songs, Anyone?

My October release, Countering His Claim, is finally on the shelves in Australia (Desires hit the shops mid-month Downunder), so to celebrate I feel like a song.

What sort of song, you ask? Why, a sailing song, of course! ;)

I played a lot of songs while writing this book (regular blog visitors will know I compile a playlist for each book) and many had a water / sea / sailing theme.

And now, for your listening and viewing pleasure, I've compiled a list of the top 5 songs about sailing and water.

5. The Beach Boys, Sloop John B
(Though their video budget clearly didn't extend to an actual ship.)

4. Elvis, Bridge Over Troubled Water
(Because, well, it's Elvis.)

3. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Ship Song
(This is a more mellow version than the one I have on my iPod. I love both.)

2. Robert Plant, Sea of Love
(There are lots of versions of this song, but this is the one I remember from my teenage years. Plus, it had a video.)

1. Rod Stewart, Sailing
(Look at how young he is. And that hair! I also really like David Campbell's version of this song -- it's the one I play on my iPod -- but I couldn't find a video of it.)

So, what do you think of my selection? Do you have another song about the sea or sailing to add to the list? I'd love to hear your suggestions!

EDITED TO ADD:

Due to some stellar suggestions from commenters so far, I'm adding in a couple of bonus songs:

First up, courtesy of Valerie Parv, is John Denver's Calypso. I can't believe I forgot this one - I have about four versions of it on my iPod - just love it!

Next is Bobby Darin's Beyond The Sea - thanks to Helen Lacey for the suggestion. Such a classic!

And for a little light fun, we have ABBA's Tropical Loveland, suggested by Michelle Douglas. Apparently the footage in the clip was filmed while they were in Australia.

And your final bonus song is Rock The Boat by The Hues Corporation. It's time to get your disco on! Thanks to Louisa George for the suggestion.

Della's trying to do the right thing and resist temptation, but she's finding it difficult. Tell me, what do you find hard to resist even though you know it's the right thing to do? I have a copy of Countering His Claim to give away to one commenter.

Countering His Claim is available now in paperback the US, and in eBook in the US, Australia and NZ. It will be on the bookshop shelves in Australia and NZ next week.

Come back next Sunday, when the winner of today's giveaway will be announced -- and a smooch from Backstage With Her Ex by Louisa George will be posted!

Blonde Heroes: Love Them or Avoid Them?

What do you think about blonde heroes? If you're reading a book and the hero is blonde, are you less interested in him than if he'd been dark-haired?

There's a rumour in romancelandia that readers prefer the tall, dark and handsome type. In fact there are stories of blonde heroes turning up dark-haired on their covers so as not to scare the readers away.

I've been thinking about this rumour lately because my October Desire, Countering His Claim, has my first ever blonde hero, Luke Marlow. The image in my head for Luke was Rupert Penry-Jones (from Persuasion, Spooks, etc). This is him in his Persuasion costume with co-star, Sally Hawkins:

However, had I wanted another actor as inspiration, I wouldn't have had to look far. In fact, there are so many blonde potential-heroes that it makes me wonder if we have different expectations for heroes in books to heroes in movies, or whether the rumour is simply not true. In the spirit of healthy debate, I've gathered photos of some of those blonde potential-heroes for your consideration...

Chris Hemsworth

Owen Wilson

Alexander Skarsgard

Simon Baker

Spike from Buffy The Vampire Slayer, aka, James Marsters

Captain America, aka, Chris Evans

And this is how the Desire art department portrayed Luke Marlow on the cover of Countering His Claim.

There were many more examples I could have given, from Jensen Ackles to Paul Newman, from Dan Stephens (Matthew in Downton Abbey) to Jude Law. What do you think? Do you have a soft spot for blonde heroes, or do you prefer tall, dark and handsome?

Let Me Take You Cruising...

In honour of my October release, Countering His Claim - which is set on a cruise ship, the Cora Mae - I'm going to do a countdown of the top 5 cruising movies / T.V shows of all time.

There were others I considered including in this list, like Stardust (who can forget Robert DeNiro and his ship?), or Wall-E (with the cruise ship in space that is now the home of the human race), but I had to whittle them down to get to just 5.

5. Pirates of the Caribbean.

Maybe it's not quite a cruise ship, but there is Captain Jack Sparrow as compensation.

 4. The Love Boat.

I loved this show when I was young - perhaps that's where my love of cruise ships originally came from? Imagine hanging out with Julie, Captain Stubbing, Doc, Gopher and the gang for a whole cruise? Fun!

3. Titanic.

Yeah, I know the ship sinks at the end, but before that it was glorious! And the bonus of Rose and Jack's love story. "I'm the king of the world!"

2. Doctor Who Specials: Voyage of the Damned.

The cruise ship Titanic is a space ship in the future (as The Doctor asks, did they remember what happened to the original Titanic?). They pretty much had me at David Tennant.

1. An Affair To Remember.

Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr, and *that* ending. What more could a person want in a movie? Happy sigh.

Have I missed any good ones? Do you have a favourite? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Cruising The South Pacific

I've always wanted to go on an ocean cruise, but, alas, I get terribly motion sick. So I did the next best thing - I wrote a book set on a cruise ship. :)

And if I was to cruise-by-proxy, where would I go? The South Pacific, of course! I've already been to many places the south pacific cruise ships dock, such as New Zealand, New Caledonia and the east coast of Australia, and I love this region. It's the perfect place to set a romance.

I visited travel agents and was given armfuls of brochures, I surfed the web, I visited some big ships down at the docks, and I went through my holiday snaps. I also grilled my other half, who spent many years on ships, and the gorgeous and generous Anna Campbell went on a cruise armed with a list of my questions for the ship's doctor (my heroine's profession).

In fact, I started to feel as if I *had* been on a cruise. The tropical islands surrounded by powder fine white sand. The vast expanses of indigo blue water. The feel of the sea breeze in my hair. Mission accomplished.

Though, now my interest in cruising has been piqued. I've also been checking out cruises to Alaska and down the Rhine. And I'm sure I could write books on a round-the-world cruise ship just as easily as from my little office.

Oh, except for that chronic motion sickness thing...

So, indulge me please. Help me live vicariously. Have you ever been on a cruise? If so, where was it and what was your favourite part? Is there a cruise you've always longed to do? Or do you hate the idea of floating in a big boat?

My cruise ship book, Countering His Claim, is out in October in the US, Aust & NZ and can be preordered now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Booktopia, Book Depository, or eHarlequin.
