THERE'S ALWAYS ONE...

There's always one, isn't there? The one who comes late to the party? The one who, despite reminders, forgets important occasions? Well, that one is me today and I'm sorry for being late to the blog.

So, what shall we talk about?

Perhaps we could chat about my eldest daughter's upcoming engagement party (and one of the reasons I'm soooo darn forgetful lately, or maybe it's just that my head is so full of STUFF that bits keep leaking out.)

We're really excited about the celebration, and the upcoming wedding next year. Plus, it's a chance for our daughter's fiance's parents to visit with us for a few days and we can return some of the wonderful hospitality they showed us when we went to spend a few days with them at the beginning of the year.

Family get togethers can be such fun, aren't they? Our lives get so busy and so full of all the day to day things we deal with--some good, some not so much--that it's lovely to have an opportunity to relax, share some memories, have a few drinks and nibbles and generally have a very good time.

What's your favourite kind of family get together? Does it revolve around birthdays, special occasions like Christmas or Easter, or do you get the chance to hang out together just for the heck of it?

  1. Yvonne, I love those impromptu parties that just seem to happen through serendipity and very little planning. But I love special celebrations! Birthdays with a zero on the end, engagement parties...and especially weddings! I hope you all have loads of fun. :-)

    1. Thanks, Reeze. Yes, I love those impromptu parties, too, but it seems life is so busy these days that unless we actually organise an event we hardly get to see anyone anymore! LOL!

  2. My favourite family get together is anytime the extended family gathers for almost any reason that we come up with (except sombre/sad events like funerals). Main reason because many of my favourite cousins and family members now live in Aus.

Would that older daughter be Miss Drill Sargeant who is not so successfully finding a house in Auckland at present? Congrats to her and her Mr Plod.

    1. Hi Lyn, yes it is the Drill Sergeant! Mr Plod popped the question just after I got back from New York. Thanks for your good wishes.

I love extended family get togethers. So many memories are shared, like you say, even at the sombre events.

  3. We all went on a family (and close family friends) get together to an island a few years back. All our expenses were paid and it was such a great time, relaxing and healing after the death of our mother a few months before. That one will go down as a special one in all our memories, Yvonne!

  4. My favorite in family get togethers in recent years was ...

My hubby's sister was turning 50 a few years ago, so I decided we should rent a beach house in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and have her and her hubby, me and my hubby (her brother) and their other brother and his spouse all get together for a week long beach vacation. We all loved it so much that I made it a tradition and when hubby turned 50 2 years ago, we gathered the gang all again for another beach house, and one more time last year when his younger brother turned 50. Now the first sibling is going to roll to 60 next year, so I have to decide whether to start the whole thing over again. :)

    1. Oh, that sounds like so much fun, LynnB. I say go for it. We put up with a lot of bad stuff through the year so having good things like that to look forward to makes everything bearable :-) .

  5. Yvonne, with your daughter's engagement coming up, it's no wonder you're distracted! And then there'll be the wedding to look forward to so I suspect your brain is going to be well occupied with exciting events for some time to come! How exciting!

We recently had a lovely family get together for my mother-in-law's 80th. Just a few of us but very special.

    1. I think my brain may well explode, Sharon! LOL.

We're doing the rounds of 80s and 90s with our oldies, too at the moment...and some friends turning 60. Gosh time has flown. Nice to know we're all still young at heart ;-)

    1. Thanks, Tammy. Christmas? Bah humbug. I always find Christmas stressful but other gatherings not so much. I really don't know why :-)

  8. Yvonne, I love Christmas with the family. Always such a good time. It's a chance to do some serious catching up as well as eating far too much and then lazing afterwards. Always such a time of good will, which is fun. Hope all the planning for the big event goes well!

    1. I used to see Christmas like this before I started having it at my house, LOL. I'm fortunate, though, in that the family all take a turn each year so we don't have to do it often.
