Stefanie London's Favourite Podcasts

In the last twelve months I've really gotten into podcasts. They help me while away the hours while I'm doing housework, cooking dinner, sitting on the subway or working out at the gym.

The thing I love about podcasts is that there are so many types - if there's a topic you're interested in, then there will be a podcast covering that subject.

Here are a few of my personal faves:

True Crime - this is probably my favourite topic for podcasts. There are tons of options in this category!

Serial - the first true crime podcast to real gain momentum. This follows a case per season set-up, with the first season covering the high profile case of Adnan Syed's murder conviction.

Criminal - this podcast takes one case per episode and explores all types of crimes. The episodes are a short but perfect for quick commutes to and from work.

Casefile - similar to Criminal in that it takes a case per episode (for the most part), but the host is Australian and many of the cases are Australian cases.

Writing/Publishing:

Self-Publishing Formula - Host by Mark Dawson, an experienced indie publisher, and James Blatch, who is getting his first novel written and ready for market. Together Mark and James talk to some of the biggest names in the industry bringing you actionable tips and ideas from across the spectrum.

Sell More Books Show - a weekly podcast focusing on helping new and experienced authors stay up-to-date with the latest self-publishing and indie news, tools and book selling/marketing strategies.

Other:

Death Sex & Money - A podcast about the big questions and hard choices that are often left out of polite conversation. A great look at people, our hangups and modern society.

Stuff You Should Know - A podcast about everything! The Stuff You Should Know team cover everything from genes to the Galapagos, the Great Wall of China to frostbite and everything in between.

Are you a podcast fan? Let me some of your faves in the comments. if not, what do you like listening to while whiling away travel time or housework?

  2. My husband is a huge podcast fan, Stef. He listens to them in the car all time. Usually sciencey kinda stuff - he loves The Infinite Monkey Cage podcast. I don't follow any podscast in particualr, I tend to listen to audio books instead, but I quite like catching the odd epiosde here and there particularly if its writing related.

    1. Some of the writing ones are great, and I find I don't always have the patience to read long articles about that stuff online so a podcast is a perfect way to digest that info.

  3. I haven't been a regular podcast listener and won't be for a wee while yet, as my To Watch Later list on Youtube is way too long. That said, I'll be adding some of your suggestions to my list.

    1. Ahh yes, YouTube is my other information platform of choice! Though usually for different topics :)

  4. I've not got into podcasts, Stef, but my daughter-in-law is a huge fan and has been prodding me to check some out. I'm a bit afraid that it will become another addiction that sucks too much of my time. Netflix Mark II! Although I could convince myself that the writing ones are necessary. How does it work, download-wise? Is each a separate app or is there a central subscription service?

    1. Netflix Mark II is a perfect description! There's a few different ways you can do it. Since I have an iphone I just use the app that comes with the phone where you can browse and subscribe to podcasts and then I stream them or download if I want to listen somewhere like the subway where internet access is minimal.

    2. Thanks, Stef. I didn't even know I had that podcast icon until you mentioned it. Duh. I shall check out the content and see what I may enjoy (or learn from!)

    1. They're great for a walk. I kind of think of them like a hybrid between a radio segment and non-fiction audio books. They're a lot of fun!

  6. My daughter listens to podcasts every night. I've yet to try but as I'm at the stage of having too many things I should be doing I'm wary of taking the plunge!

  7. I've listened to a few TED talks while walking on the treadmill and I've enjoyed those. But I haven't gotten into the routine of listening to them. That said, 'Death Sex and Money' sounds very intriguing. I might have to investigate the world of podcasts further. :-)

    1. Death, Sex & Money along with Serial were the podcasts that got me hooked. They have great production value, which make them easy to listen to and I love the topics they cover on DSM. Fascinating insights into people, which I think helps me to create more well-rounded characters even though it's not a writing podcast.

  8. Hi Stefanie,
I've listened to a few author podcasts while I was doing the ironing and they were really interesting. My husband loves podcasts and listens to them all the time but I always have so much going on inside my head that to listen to more would send me a little crazy... or crazier!
