De Lovely De Leo

I guess it's very clear that I have a big soft spot for the name Leo. It was the name of my wonderful dad, one of my sons is Luca Leo, and of course it's part of my last name as well.

One of my very favourite Leos in the world is this one right here, and what a wonderful week he's had!
In a beautiful piece of serendipity I'm also teaching the film The Great Gatsby to my year thirteen class at the moment and judging by the girls' reactions, Leo is one of those guys whose appeal spans the ages.
I remember falling in love with him when he played Arnie in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape".
I also teach Romeo and Juliet to Year 10 girls and if they didn't love Shakespeare before, they certainly do after watching Leo play Romeo.
And for my own girls this would have to be one of their favourite scene from any movie ever.
And so I was one of the many million this week who were so relieved that Leo finally got his Oscar. And true to all those noble and romantic heroes he has played, he took the opportunity to mention his concerns about the environment and how grateful he was to receive such recognition.

So what do we think? Do we all love Leo??

  1. Don't shoot me, Barb, but I've never been a big Leo fan. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike him...it's just that he's never been the kind of actor who's made me sit up and take notice. But, I really enjoyed all of those clips. Maybe I need to give him a second look. ;-)

    1. You know, Michelle and Amy, my very first thought is "that's okay, all the more for me", but have you not SEEN him in Romeo and Juliet??!! I admit that some of his roles have been a bit dodgy but that's a stand out for me :)

  2. Not a huge Leo fan I'm afraid, Barb. And avoiding Revenant like the plague....I dont dislike him I guess I just feel ambivalent towards him.
But good on him for using his significant platform to be an activist!

    1. Amy, I'm with you on Revenant, it looks way too gruesome for me. Yes, I do love a man who cares about the world!

  3. Oops, not my favourite either, Barb.

  5. Hi Barb, lots of Leo love from me too! I think he's played some amazing characters. The movies Blood Diamond and The Departed stand out for me - really gritty stuff. Though he was wonderful in Titanic! (happy sigh) Yay, to him for winning the Oscar!

    1. I'm sure I must have seen both of those, Sharon, but I can't remember them. What a great excuse for some more Leo watching.

  6. Hi Barbara

I think the only movies I have seen him in was Titanic and I have to say it is one of my most favourite movies I love it but truly I am not a big movie fan theses days I rarely watch any TV or movies but I am sure your students would be over the moon with what you are teaching and how I wish we did things like that when I was at school :)

    Have Fun

    1. It's quite funny, Helen because I swoon and then the girls swoon. There aren't many actors who can cross generations like that. Maybe Johnny Depp but he's a little creepy now...Like you I don't watch many movies so I'm always on the look out for a good one.

  7. Can't say that Leo's a must watch for me... however I am thrilled he finally got his oscar.

Wish you had been my English teacher. My 6th form (?Year 12) English teacher had a second job as film reviewer for the local paper and refused to let us watch the Leo version - even though I'm sure it would have engaged a lot more of us. The version we watched was I think the BBC version and you can imagine how little attention we paid after seeing it several times.

  8. Oh yes! I love me some Leo!!!! I adored Titanic, (obviously!) and have really enjoyed most of the films I've seen him in; Blood Diamond, Wolf of Wall Street and the ones you've mentioned (haven't seen Gilbert Grape...). I recently saw the Revenant and it was very intense. There wasn't a whole heap of dialogue so we saw Leo's reactions through his body language. It was raw and gruesome and harrowing and he definitely deserved the Oscar for it. So glad he got it, and that he used his platform to talk about something he's passionate about.

  9. I'm a total fan of his acting/craft (although I reckon he's probably a dick in real life) and applauded with gusto at his much deserved Oscar win.

Louisa, I agree with everything you said about The Revenant and Leo's role. I wasn't keen, exactly, to see it and thought I'd spend a lot of time hiding my face and blocking my ears but I actually loved it. One of his best.

  10. Leo is an incredible actor, I'm a big fan. I haven't seen The Revenant yet (sadly, I hardly ever make it to the movies these days) but I likely will when it's out on Netflix or similar.

But I love so many of his movies - Blood Diamond, The Great Gatsby, Wolf of Wall Street, Inception, Shutter Island...the list goes on.

This might make me lose my romance writer card...but I hated Titanic *ducks*
