Do You Game?

I'd never been big on playing games on devices. My brother had a donkey kong little game when we were young, and I remember playing tennis on an Atari (with a little round ball and two straight bars going up and down on either side of the screen). Oh, and I loved solitaire on the computer (still do!).

But that all changed a couple of years ago when my nephew made me try Plants vs Zombies. I was addicted. I played a few other games - Bejeweled Blitz and the like - but Plants vs Zombies was my main love.

Then they updated the game by creating a whole new game: PvZ2, and I don't like it. I've tried playing the original, but without updates it's stagnated, and the gloss has worn off for me.

After that, I didn't have a favourite game for a long while, until I stumbled across Candy Crush Saga. I'd heard about it all last year when it was popular, but I hadn't dipped my toe in. Now I'm in the midst of another game addiction.

Though, this one has a saving grace of only giving me 5 lives at a time (after that I have to wait half an hour for each one to refresh, or pay for more lives), so I play a couple of lives on my writing breaks then put it away again.

So what about you? Do you play games? Have any favourites? Prefer to play on your device, or computer, or on Facebook? Any recommendations for me? Any to stay away from? Tell me all! :)

  1. I've never been much of a gamer, but I must admit that I did succumb to Candy Crush Saga and I'd hate to think how many hours and days and weeks lay waste to that demon spawn. :-) But I did eventually grow tired of the game, possibly because I'd reached a level that I couldn't conquer and that was that. I deleted it from the phone and moved on.

  2. Bronwyn, I remember you playing Candy Crush on your phone when we were at Rottnest - it was one of the things that brought it to my attention. Out of interest, what level did you get up to?

    1. Hmm, it's been a few months since deletion but from memory it was somewhere in the mid 300's.

    2. 300's? You're a star, Bronwyn. I'm at 165 and struggling!

  3. How fun was playing on the Atari? We thought those games were amazing back then! My brother and I saved our pocket money in primary school for a year to buy the first ever Nintendo console. Mario Bros is still my favourite game. I didn't play games much after that.

Last year I discovered Candy Crush Saga and I am well and truly addicted. I play it on my smartphone, rather than on the computer because there is a way to trick the app into giving you lives by changing the date on your phone. This is probably a bad thing because I never run out of lives and could play forever haha

    1. Oh, noes! Don't tell me about a trick to get new lives - I'll never get any writing done! ;)

Totally agree, Lauren - those first games were such fun - there was an excitement because they were like nothing we'd ever had before.

I too remember Ms Jameson playing Candy Crush at Rottnest. I thought she was very groovy! :-)

    1. Yeah, Amy, if you're not already obsessed, you should walk away from this post with a hand over your eyes. Pretend you never saw it. ;)

  5. No, I've never been a gamer, but many years ago when we bought a Sega Master System for our boys we had a family challenge on Alex the Kid that lasted right through the summer holidays. It was a lot of fun and still gets mentioned in our house occasionally as a great shared memory.

Now I'm too scared to try a game in case I get hooked and lose a chunk of my life to it.

    1. Oh, the old Segas! And a whole family challenge that lasted through the summer? I can imagine what fun that would have been.

Claire, I think you should take the advice I gave Amy above. ;)

  6. I play Candy Crush on Facebook. I like it with only 5 lives. I lose 5 times and I quit until the next day. I am only on level 30 ,so not bored with it yet.

    1. Tammy, the containment of only having 5 lives is great, isn't it? Keeps me from getting carried away. Especially since I sometimes play the lives and it's over when I think I've only played three. Show's how much it sucks me in and makes me lose sense of time!

I have never been a big game player although I have played bejewelled blitz and Candy crush also the farm games but I realized they just took up so much time time that I could be reading LOL so the only game I play these days is solitarie on the PC and that is here and there :). So no recomedations from me

    Have Fun

    1. Helen, I haven't tried any of the farm games - they looked like hard work to me, lol.

You make a very good point about games taking away time from reading - it's all about priorities!

  8. I'm not a gamer I'm afraid, Rach. I always think the games will be fun but kinda lose interest very quickly (which is probably a blessing -- I already have enough procrastination tools thank you very much).

Of course there's an exception and that was when Myst first came out. The DH and I became hopelessly addicted…and I just LOVED wandering around in this beautiful world and exploring the sights. :-)

    1. Ooooh, that's interesting, Michelle. I've always thought things like Myst were way above me. I play the simple ones. :) In terms of losing interest - I like the ones that have levels, so it gets harder all the time.

But yes, best not to get involved if you already have too many procrastination tools!

  9. Rachel, you introduced me to Plants vs Zombies! It was huge fun though I confess that I haven't kept up with it so I can't comment on the latest changes. But isn't it a pest when they update something and the updated version is kinda blah... I could go on here about Windows 7 vs Windows 8... but I'll resist 'coz it's not pretty! LOL

My games experience is very tame - I like FreeCell and Spider Patience... and triangle patience... it's just as well the Windows 8 system of letting me into games really annoys me or I just know I'd play it more often! So that's really a blessing in disguise, isn't it!

    1. Sharon, you're welcome for PvZ. ;)

I love FreeCell and Spider! And they're good for dipping in and out too. However I don't know Triangle Patience. Must investigate...

  10. I definitely grew up in the gaming generation - my sister and I used to play Super Mario and Crash Bandicoot for hours during school holidays. Now I don't play a lot of games but I have a weakness for Resident Evil, Bejewelled and Angry Birds.

    1. Stefanie, it's amazing what difference a few years in age makes, isn't it? A couple of generations ago, a few years meant you had pretty much an identical childhood experience, but now a few years means everything is different! Things are changing so fast.

You know, I never got into Angry Birds, haven't even tried it, but I love Bejeweled. Resident Evil - that sounds too scary for me! And I haven't heard of Crash Bandicoot - must go and investigate...
