What I'm Loving Right Now

Apart from Easter chocolate, especially these lush handmade beauties from Winnow Chocolates, I'm loving the sync between Kindle and Audible versions of my reading.

I read most often on Kindle but I hosted a family get-together for Easter -- a lazy lunch for 44 -- which involved considerable preparation. Much house-cleaning, gardening, cooking in advance, and some painting: a project low on my To-Do list until the influx of visitors.

We all agree that the only way to clean is with an audiobook in your ears, am I right?

So, over the past weeks I've heard a lot of hours of book narration BUT for my night reading I prefer the Kindle. I can read faster and I tire of wearing earphones which cut me off from other conversations. My dh tires of repeating questions/comments when, eyes glazed and mind deep in storyland, I lift an earphone and murmur "Were you talking to me?"

This is the beauty of whispersync between the 2 versions and I am a fan. I only wish this facility was more widely and consistently available. Even within popular series it is not always available. I've been binging on two series: CJ Box's Joe Pickett series (suspense/thrillers set in the Wyoming/Montana Rockies) and a re-read of JD Robb's In Death series (I'd missed too many over too long to pick up again without revisiting.)

BUT not all books are whispersync for voice ready.  Annoying but since the Easter clean is over I can return to my Kindle knowing that next major clean will be made bearable thanks to the beauty of audible books which sync with my Kindle.

My Hot Cross Bun Pudding

Do you listen to audiobooks?  What are you reading/listening to this long weekend?

  1. Oh my, Bron, I love the look of that hot cross bun pudding? Is there some stuff beneath the hot cross buns?

This weekend I've read Hot Head a M/M romance by Damon Suede which was sweet and hot all at one and have just started Hiedi Rice's RITA nommed book 10 Rules To Sex Up A Blind Date, am half way thorugh and loving it!

    1. It's a riff on the old-fashioned bread-and-butter pud, AA, with the buns baked in custard. They're chocolate buns sprinkled with extra chocolate so it's a festive Easter recipe (says me.)

Love the sound of your Easter reads.

  2. I used to listen to audio books on the commute to and from work in the city. Knowing I'd be hearing more of the story made me keen to get into the car. I found that I particularly enjoyed biographies in audio book format.

    1. I think I would enjoy biographies, too, Claire. I imagine they lend themselves to the "telling" style of audiobooks…as though the narrator is telling their own story. I must try one!

I feel the same as you re "getting back to the book". Actually can make me keen to get back to housework (sort of!)

    1. My sister is a knitter, Helen, and has been doing some scarves for a commercial label. She can't wait to get to "work" each day because she knits while watching movies or TV. I must suggest audiobooks as another option.

Also, you have been just down the road from me this weekend. Glad you found some time for Kate Walkers' latest (love her work!) in between the noisy family time!

  4. I think you need to share the recipe for the hot cross bun pudding.
I have yet to find an audio book that I like the narration of. However, I do enjoy my e-reader for ease of taking books to and from work etc.
Current reading is Jaci Burton's Hope series - I've had first book on my reader for a while and the Easter sale for Kobo meant I was able to pick up the prelude and books 2 and 3 for about the same price as buying one of the titles normally. Lots and lots of unread books on the ereader at present so I'll be limiting how much I'm buying in terms of books for a while

  5. I wish I could find it again, Lyn. I saw it on Facebook but now, as is the way, can't recall where. But I think it may have been one of the magazines. Google turned up this one which looks very similar. Hope the link works:

Lyn, the narrator makes such a difference. I really like the JD Robb narrator -- I think it's Susan Ericksen? or similar. Others have turned me right off the book. On reflection, I'm thinking I like suspense/thrillers as a genre more then straight romance and that rom-com's/chick-lit has possibly yielded the worst results because the narrators force the humour or the character voice too hard.

Ah yes, all the unread sale purchases on the e-reader. I must admit to being in the same boat but I am powerless to resist a bargain book in any format.

  6. I got into audio books when I was commuting, but now I work from home I find I've not listened to them as much. Good idea about using them to making cleaning more interesting, they might just be the thing I need to tackle my huge ironing pile!

    1. Stefanie, ironing and book-listening sounds like a match made in heaven (or, to be realistic, a way to actually get through the ironing without noticing!)

  7. I used audio books a lot for my kids when they were little, but I haven't really got into them myself. I love the idea of listening during housework but this is something I try very hard to avoid spending too much time on.

I've began reading Anna Campbell's latest release this weekend. Looks like it's going to be a lot of fun!!

    1. Jen, now you have me thinking even more -- after Claire and Lyn's comments -- on the best genres for listening. I'm thinking that I much prefer the actual reading of scrumptious historicals such as Anna writes. Because the words, the structure, the pacing etc are so important and how you, as a reader, pace yourself…that's all part of the enjoyment. Some sections you need to race through, others to slow down and loll about in the story. Which you can't do when a narrator sets the pace. If that makes any sense…

Anyways, enjoy your Anna Campbell. The perfect Easter escape!

  8. Ooh, looks like a scrummy Easter was had at your house, Bron. :-)

I've never gotten into audio books, don't know why. I will give them a whirl one day I expect. I've just finished a old Anne Stuart: Prince of Swords--an historical romp that was lots of fun. :-)

  9. Is there any more fun than an historical romp, Michelle? You're making me long to pick one up when the weekend is over and I need to be working!

PS: I should also acknowledge that the scrummy eating is over and ditch the leftovers but I am weak...

  10. Hi Bron, a little party for 44? Wow!

I used to listen to audio books on long trips - absolutely fantastic for that. Must get back into it - time for a trip, obviously!

I've just finished a very old mystery by Josephine Tey - a loan from a friend. Interesting to see how styles have changed in half a centuy!

    1. Isn't it interesting to note the change in style and in mores? I haven't heard of Josephine Tey but wonder if she was a contemporary of Agatha Christie et al. Women rocked the mystery genre back then.
