All I Want to do is K.I.S.S!

HAPPY NEW YEAR one and all!! I hope 2015 brings you all the joy you wish for and then some.

I know it's traditional for the new year's post at Lovecats to be about resolutions and goals, plans and commitments, so I thought I'd share my one with you.

That's right, this year I've got ONE simple goal. One that I hope I can incorporate into many different parts of my life and I'd love some company on the way. Is anyone up for the challenge?

My goal is best summed up by a K.I.S.S principle- "Keep it Slow, Sweetie!"

Just like the subjects in Dr Libby Weaver's best selling book "Rushing Woman's Syndrome" I've found myself in the last few years trying to do things more and more quickly.  It doesn't really matter if I have two things or twelve to get done in a day, I'm always in a "hurry".
I'm constantly telling the kids to hurry up
I can finish a whole meal and forget what any of it tasted like
As soon as I'm on the phone I'm thinking I need to get off and get onto the next thing
I'm always looking for ways to fit more an more into my day.
But you know what? The more I hurry the less I enjoy what I'm doing, the more life seems to be like a series of tasks to be fulfilled, rather than a feast of experiences to be savoured and enjoyed, and I'm determined to change that.

So many things are so much nicer when time is taken, don't you think? A slow cooked dinner, a long and luxurious bath, an afternoon spent with a girlfriend catching up on everything just because we can. And who would want to hurry a kiss with our special someone?

I'm starting with simply eating more slowly - savouring each mouthful and enjoying the experience rather than just shoving nutrients down my throat. I've ditched my watch, and over the holiday period I'm going to try and banish the words "hurry up" from my vocabulary. Of course the big challenge will be when everyone's back at work and school, trying to find the determination to slow down and smell some roses, even if everyone else is rushing about.

What about you? Are you ready to take something more slowly?

    1. Great to have you join me, Helen, although I've noticed that all your grandchildren seem to keep you very busy indeed!

  2. Thanks for this thought provoking post, Barb- totally agree with this plan. For me, I need to add- worry less about every 'little' thing and allocate that wasted time to writing! Less hurrying and less worrying, sounds like a doable plan for 2015.
    Happy New Year xxx m

    1. Oh, I'm with you on the worry thing, Margie! I thought that was supposed to lessen as we got older but it's certainly not the case for me. I like the sound of the two of us being chilllllllled and sloooooooow.

  3. Oh, heaven's, YES! That is such a brilliant resolution, Barb. I'm guilty of it too and I think it can suck the joy out of life when one gets on that particular treadmill. So I'll make that same resolution -- to slow down and enjoy the journey...even when I'm busy. :-)

    1. Lovely to have you with me, Michelle. I think I might have overdone it yesterday, though, seems I was going so slow I actually fell asleep at one point!! At least I'm sticking to the plan :)

    1. Lovely to have you with me, Claire. I particularly like the look of that chilled out snail. He's going to be my new mascot.

  5. Barb, that sounds great. That constant feeling of rushing really doesn't help, does it? I think I'll try taking a leaf from your book this year.

    1. Exactly, Annie. The "H" and the "R" words are going to be banned from my vocabulary this year.

  6. Sounds intriguing Barbara. I haven't even considered New Years Resolutions this year. That said I haven't had a look at my goals to see if they need updating for a while so that's probably going to happen in the near future. The fact it is so close to New Years is coincidence.
Having seen the post that you put up of a typical day for you, I'm hardly surprised that the resolution you've selected is K.I.S.S.

    1. Ha, Lyn! You're absolutely right. Not sure how all those things are going to get done with the new regime but mind isn't working fast enough to figure that out ;-)Good luck with the revision of your goals!

    2. One part of your solution is DELEGATION!!!! I'm sure the twins and twins are old enough to be capable of helping out, whether they want to or not.

  7. Sounds like a great goal, Barb and one that a lot of us need! I think having instant access to everything these days makes us feel like we're always 'on call' and always having to check what the rest of the world is doing and try to catch up. I'm all for stopping and smelling the roses and tasting the food! I'm meditating once a day and that certainly helps to s-l-o-w down (actually stop) for a while which is lovely. Best of luck with your resolution!

  8. I want to grab this post and kiss out hard on the lips, I love it THAT much! It is so important to remember the most important parts of our life -- those that bring the most pleasure -- and how can we enjoy them when we are too busy rushing to the next thing? Thank you for reminding me as we head into a new year with many goals based on doing this, achieving that. Mustn't forget to enjoy life as well.

  9. Lovely post, Barb - and I feel like Bron! This is a great reminder to enjoy the journey!

Oh and I like your KISS anagram a lot more that the one I first hear which was "Keep It Simple, Stupid"! "Keep It Slow, Sweetie" is so much more positive and encouraging!
