Happily Ever After.....

By Helen Lacey

It's probably no secret that most romance authors (If not all) love a happy ever after. Of course, some romantic books and movies don't always end with the traditional Happy Ending (Think Nights in Rodanthe). But I am a total sucker for a happy ending. The cheesier the better. I love it when the hero bares his soul for the woman he loves. I was cheering for Lucy in While You Were Sleeping when Jack tossed the diamond ring into the slot at the token booth. And who can forget the final scene in Pretty Woman when Edward (A swoon worthy Richard Gere) climbs the stairwell to reach Vivian even though he had a chronic fear of heights. And what about Harry running through the streets on the stroke of midnight to finally tell Sally she was the only woman in the world for him..... here it is.

One of my favourite movies of all time is The Mirror Has Two Faces. I love the chemistry between Jeff Bridges and Barbra Streisand in this final scene while the credits are rolling and they dance in the street and squee every time I watch it because I know Rose finally gets her happy-ever-after.

One of the first romantic comedy/dramas I saw when I was young is also one of my favourites - Love With A Proper Stranger. if you ever get the chance to watch this classic with Steve McQueen and Natalie Wood, I thoroughly recommend it.

And finally, another of my old time favourites....even though I couldn't find the link to the movie, I found the theme song. From the movie Promise Her Anything, starring Warren Beatty and Leslie Caron, here's the one and only Tom Jones.....

Do you have a favourite romantic movie - classic or modern day?

  1. Hi Helen

I too am a sucker a HEA love them but over the years I have loved some romantic movies that didn't end in a HEA and they are Loves Story and The Way We Where both of these show what love is to me even though in Love Story the heroine dies and in The Way We Where they truly love each other but just have such different views on life they cannot live together and at the end of the movie when they see each other again the look tells all :) and another of my favourites is An Affair to Remember love that one

    Have Fun

  2. Ah Helen - The Mirror Has Two Faces is one of my fav movies too!
I especially love this scene where she gives the lecture about love and romance in fiction because it's exactly why I think a lot of us write it -

Two of my other favs for classic romance endings are Noting Hill and Bridget Jones's Diary (the first one). Both of them are completely sigh worthy :-)

    1. Hi AA - yes, the lecture scene is wonderful. I love his realization of love scene too....when he's lying on the couch at his friends house and is wonderfully miserable :) And yes, Notting Hill is on my favourites list. And Bridget, of course. :)

  3. If I know that a movie doesn't have a happy ending I refuse to watch it. Life is too short. I want to feel satisfied, not cheated.

I have never seen Love with a Proper Stranger. I must fix that.

    1. Hi Louisa - The Mirror has Two Faces is a wonderful movie. And I do love Bridget Jones....quite the modern day heroine. I love the scene where they are cooking dinner and she makes the blue soup lol in pure Bridget fashion. And of course, Colin Firth makes a darn good Darcy any day of the year. :)

  8. Ooh, I love a happy ending! I like smiling through the credits, feeling that all's right with the world. It's not a straight romance as such but 'Enchanted April' has an ending like that - the feeling that all is well with the world and the people involved are getting their happy ending.

I haven't watched The Mirror Has Two Faces. Will keep a look out now!

Love, love the ending of North & South at the train station. Love that she's so nervous about the business proposal and he's so sure. And when he holds her hand and she lift it and kisses it, I just swoon!
