Resisting Temptation

I am a woman easily tempted.

Chocolate lips are tempting
This is a fact well-known -- and well-exploited-- by those who know me well.  And here's the thing: I enjoy being tempted.  The thought of doing something a little bit bad, forbidden, creates a rush…it's similar to what I get from my favourite type of romance.  It's what attracted me to category romance right out of the box: I couldn't get enough stories of forbidden love.  This storyline remains a strong favourite.

Being a woman of little willpower, I am a sucker for pretty much everything that is bad for me.  Chocolate, shopping I can't afford, wine, movie dates when I should be working, cake, trips away when I should be working, ice-cream, catch-up television when I should be working.  You get the drift.

I love skiing (slowly)
The latest temptation sent to lure me: my sister is planning a ski trip to America next January/February.  Free accommodation.  I have enough points for airfare.  The chance for sister-bonding.  How could I not be tempted?  BUT -- and it is the big but -- I have already booked a holiday to America late this year, with my husband, and two overseas holidays within three months would be excessively indulgent.

After days poring over flight schedules and connection times and selecting dates to avoid special birthdays and such, I gave myself a Cher/Moonstruck-style slap and said "Snap out of it, Bronwyn." I told my sister, "sorry, this is the wrong year for me", and waited for the glums to hit.  Waiting, still waiting...

Five days later and I'm feeling pretty good about my decision and even better that I managed to resist temptation. Turns out that I kinda like saying "no".  Perhaps I should do this more often.  :-)

What temptation have you resisted lately…or did you give in and enjoy the heck out of it?

    1. A good book and no cooking/dishes? That sounds like the perfect night in to me, Helen. Hope you and hubbie enjoyed!

(Living in "the bush" as I do, getting take-out is actually a bit of an effort so we don't indulge every often so I envy you that option.)

  2. Good for you, Bronwyn! It's great that you still feel good about your decision - it makes me think that your subconscious agrees that it's the right move for you.

Books are one of my biggest temptations, just like Helen! And another big temptation for me is op shops! Just love 'em! Especially op shops far from home! Love 'em even more! And I feel a teensy bit virtuous because it's another way of recycling - ergo, I'm doing my bit for the planet!

    1. You are correct, Sharon. It *is* the right decision for me at this particular time. This weekend all my sisters will be home for Mothers' Day and we'll get to spend girl-time without the expense of an o/s trip. I'm really looking forward to that.

Virtuous temptation is the bomb! Go you with the op-shops!

  3. Oooh, I feel for you. Saying no to travel is the hardest thing of all! My most recent temptation was the Hot Cross Buns in the shops since January!!! I find these really hard to resist. I held out til March though. And hated every day :-)

    1. Ah, a woman after my own heart. I love travel, near and far, and would do multiple trips every year if circumstances allowed.

Hot-cross buns are yummo. I think any baked good, like excellent sourdough or just-baked bread rolls are also high on my temptation list. It is a long thing, that list.

  4. Oh maybe you can be my inspiration. I don't think I have resisted any temptation lately! Well, clothes maybe but doesn't count since I am now retired and don't really need them. Food is always a challenge, but the real temptations books, books and more books.

  5. I would love to inspire someone, so go ahead. Let me be your inspiration. Use me. :-) Although I'm not going to be much use in stopping you with the book temptation, since I think that's one we should indulge. Books are both entertaining AND educational so why resist? Lets just call them a staple and not an indulgence and read on!!!

  6. Wow Bron. I'm impressed. Resisting travel is tough.

Hmmm, what have I resisted lately?? Actually, I resisted chocolate every day. My hubby is a chocoholic and we have so much Lindt in the house we could open a shop and every day I say no!

    1. You a woman of strong willpower, Jennifer. I admire that. Now that I've resisted travel perhaps I will try to say no to chocolate as well. I'll let you know how that goes!

  7. Bron, a ski trip is an unfair amount of temptation! Applauding you for managing to resist it. That said, I'm hoping a ski trip features in you and your sister's futures at some later date. :-)

This is going to make me sound like a lush, but this week I've been resisting alcohol. Oh how much I love red wine, white wine, gin and tonics, champagne, single malt scotch and beer! But in the interests of health I'm having a alcohol-free week. Mind you, as I'm not finding it particularly difficult I probably don't deserve the pat on the back that I'm giving myself. ;-)

    1. Good for you, Michelle. And I don't for a second believe you to be lush-like, given that you've managed to resist this week. Go you!

  8. I'm rubbish at resisting temptation- I find it hard to say no to anything. Although I did try on a dress today and put it back even though it was very nice- I don't 'need' another dress, I'm a dressaholic! Kudos to you for knowing what was the right thing for you (I would have said yes, then worried it wasn't the right time/too expensive etc...I think I suffer from FOMO- Fear Of Missing Out!!)

  9. Oh, Louisa, I HEAR you!!! FOMO is exactly what I suffer from and what often drives me. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - think of all the experiences we'd miss out on without that impetus.

  10. I'm also terrible at resisting temptation, the easiest thing for me is just to remove it. Don't keep the chocolates in the house so if I fancy something sweet I have to make it myself and therefore it'll be a bit healthier. Not perfect but it works for me :)
