Yesterday I had a tooth extracted, and, I have to admit, I'm a complete baby about things happening in my mouth / head. It just all seems too... close to home.
Now I'm in the process of self-medicating with comfort food (of the soft variety) and comfort reading. But I've probably re-read my favourite comfort books too many times and am in desperate need of something new.
Nothing challenging, nothing that will scare me, nothing edgy. Today, I'm all about the feel-good, warm-and-fuzzy reads. Your go-to books that always make you feel better.
In return for your suggestions, I'll give one commenter a copy of either The Finn Factor or The Summer of Jake (winner's choice).
Okay, I have my clicking finger ready. TIA. Go!
Hi Rachel
ReplyDeleteOh I do hope you are feeling better very soon I am with you on the Dentist I don't like
You know I don't re read mainly because I have so many awesome new books on the TBR pile but in saying that my keeper shelf is filled with books that I would always re read but can I suggest Barbara Hannay's The Secret Years if you have not read this one it is fab and there are so many others that I could recommend but that might take a while :)
Fingers crossed you are feeling better soon
Have Fun
Helen
Helen, I think the fact that dentists are right in your face as they work makes it worse.
DeleteOooh, I've seen that Barbara Hannay book a few times and thought it looked good. Looks like I need to grab a copy! Thanks. :)
Also Barbara's book Molly Cooper's Dream Date. So charming.
DeleteHi, I can recommend Janice Kay Johnson for some comforting romance with some family issues. What about opening the door and pour your tears on the man who's just going to measure your kitchen? Read what happens next in The perfect Mom.
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better real soon.
Riet, I haven't read a Janice Kay Johnson book before, so I nipped over to Amazon to have a look. The Perfect Mom hasn't been released in kindle yet and isn't available in paperback anymore, so I went to her author page on Amazon and found heaps and heaps of books that look delicious. Thanks for the suggestion!
DeleteUgh! Hugs, Rach. I always have to screw up all my courage for a dentist visit.
ReplyDeleteHave you read L.M. Montgomery's The Blue Castle yet? One of the Best Romances Ever. And Brilliant Comfort Read. So much to love about it. And it's only $0.74 -- go download it for your kindle.

Oh, and suggestion #2 -- when did you last read Winnie the Pooh? I'm having a blast with it at the moment. I think I'll be pulling Alice in Wonderland out next. :-)
Ooh, thanks for that suggestion, Michelle! I just one-clicked!
DeleteIt's a very sweet read, Amy...but wonderful! Valancy is such a downtrodden heroine at the beginning and it's wonderful to watch her find the courage to go against her (awful!) family and forge a meaningful and delightful life for herself. :-)
DeleteI love rereading Jayne Ann Krentz's Trust Me, such fun. I also love Anne Gracie's current bride series for wonderful heroines finding fabulous heroes. Then, for the dog lover in you, if you haven't already, try Dodie Smith's The 101 Dalmations and also The Starlight Barking. Terrific to read as an adult!
ReplyDeleteThe only books I ever really re-read are Jenny Crusies and I'm assuming they were the ones you were alluding too so I'm probably no help but hugs on the dentist, Rach. Not my favourite people.....
ReplyDeleteMy favorite retreads that I read no matter what time of year are anthologies with multiple authors like Merry Christmas Baby , Perfect for the Beach and jingle Bell Rock
ReplyDeleteMy 'go-to' re-read book has to be Pride and Prejudice - helped by visions of Colin Firth as Mr Darcy in that wet shirt scene.
ReplyDeleteYum - better than chocolate.
Hope you're feeling better soon, Rachel!
ReplyDeleteHow about Georgette Heyer, PG Wodehouse (try a Blandings novel) or an Amelia Peabody story by Elizabeth Peters. All wonderful, all good fun and nothing to be scared of, unless you fear Regency rakes, oversized pigs or walking mummies in the desert!
The books I have been reading lately have been wonderfully gritty - for want of a better word.
ReplyDeleteOn another note I have just re-read WUTHERING HEIGHTS - my go to book.
I almost never re-read books, but one that I adore and found to be totally charming was Lauren Willig's Mischief of the Mistletoe. It's a Christmas story, but I read it in the middle of the year. It's historical, romantic, hilarious and has a little mystery to it. Definitely worth a read for something to give you the warm and fuzzies.
ReplyDeletehope you're feeling better soon!
