Small Town V Big City....

I've just submitted my eighth book for Harlequin Special Edition to my editor and although this next series is set across the ditch in South Dakota, I am still writing about small town's and close-knit communities. As I dive into book number nine I've been wondering what readers prefer - the small town setting, or the big city.

I must admit I like reading both, but when I write a book I always tend to sway towards small towns. Obviously that has a lot to do with the type of book I write, as Special Edition generally do have a real home and family theme running through them. And this seems to reflect on the TV I watch too - as I'm probably more Gilmore Girls than Sex In The City...more Picket Fences than Law & Order...more Longmire than The Good Wife.

So, do your reading and TV tastes match?

Do you like both?

And I've added a picture of a cowboy here because...well...I just love cowboys....

  1. Helen, love that middle photo. Beautiful. I tend to write more small town, close communities stories, but love to read stories in all settings. With movies I'm more in favour of the big settings, most of the time anyway. It's escapism, I think.

    1. Hi Sue - yes, that makes sense....city folk reading/watching country settings and then the other way around. :)

  2. For settings I like both. More books I read are set in small towns. Would like to read more big city books these days

  4. Helen, if there's a cowboy in it I wouldn't care if he was on the subway or on the rolling prairie :D I think I mostly prefer small towns, though, perhaps because I grew up in one and live in one now. I love writing about communities in small towns, too.

  5. I read and like both, but tend to lean more towards the small-town as I can relate more to them. I grew up & went to colleges in smaller towns but now live in a city.

  6. I'm a total non-discrimmatory reader/watcher (some people think this is a bad thing?) but as a writer I'm like to be be a little contrary :-) I love writing about small communities within urban settings that have that small town feel to them. I call them urban-family stories.

And cowboys, of course. Cowboys go without saying!

  7. Congratulations on your eighth book, Helen! I lean towards small towns which is not to say I don't enjoy big cities for a visit! My TV viewing and reading tastes have a foot firmly in each camp.

I used to be a city reading gal, but now having lived in a small town (and was completely converted to small town life through Sea Change) and like those stories too.

  9. Ooh, Helen, I'll have a serve of each, thank you! With a side serving of cowboy. ;-) They all have their, uh...attractions.

  10. I like a little of each - variety is the spice of life as they say! I've always been a city girl but as I get older I find myself liking the idea of a smaller community. The cowboys certainly don't hurt either! ;)
