Just my luck…?

I'm sorry. Truly, I am. To whoever I upset or crossed…please take pity on me now!  I don't remember breaking a mirror or walking under a ladder but recently I've been having some…challenges

-Monday- at the gym, I was sitting on one of those large swiss balls doing posture strengthening exercises with a trainer, when suddenly the ball rolled out from under me, bouncing me backside first to the floor causing a 5kg dumbbell to smash against my calf, ripping a huge dent in my pride (of course there were lots of people in the usually very quiet gym) and causing a very large swollen bruise

-Tuesday -I popped in to the local Indian restaurant and had a brief chat to the owner. I discovered they were closing down in two days so I mentioned I was coming in with a group of friends the next day. When we arrived the restaurant was in darkness- they'd decided that no one had actually booked a table (and for them, chances were we wouldn't turn up) so they'd closed down a day early! So we were stuck there hungry and thirsty after a bracing walk, no other restaurant for a couple of miles, with no transport to get anywhere else, and no food! And because I hadn't 'booked' per se I felt hugely responsible.

Is the universe telling me something?
-Wednesday - and I can barely even bring myself to tell you this…  I sat on my ensuite toilet and the damn thing Fell. Off. The. Wall.  Yet another bounce to my poor backside which, like my back and legs, was pretty soggy from the toilet basin water (thankfully I'd just cleaned the damn thing!) Red-faced and bruised I had to phone a plumber who thought the whole thing was hysterical! Of course, that type of toilet isn't stocked any more, so they can't get more bracings for the wall, and therefore we have to buy a whole new toilet!

Trouble comes in threes, they say. So I won't include the spilt cup of coffee all over my iPad/keyboard this morning or the blown-up swimming pool pump on Tuesday in case I might be asking the universe for one more thing to make a double-run this week. I'm hoping I've had my run of bad luck for a while, but I'm going out to buy a rabbit's foot to carry around with me just in case (not a real one, obviously!). I've never been superstitious before but I'm thinking I might just give it a try. I have a friend who always gets a car parking space right outside wherever she's going (be it restaurant, shop etc) and never has to drive round the block searching, she also often wins raffles and competitions for big ticket items, and sees herself as just 'lucky.' Me? Not so much.

My husband reckons I'm just focusing on the negatives and grouping random events to make it seem like I'm unlucky. Is he right? Is it really just observation bias? Do you believe in luck or superstition? Do you consider yourself lucky or unlucky? Anyone out there know what I should do to make sure my luck gets better?

  1. When I stop laughing .... Sorry, Louisa, I'm not really. Much, anyway. Because now I've probably incurred the bad lucks gods to pay me a visit. Definitely a run of bad stuff going down on you. No one has that many things happen in a row. I could send you a real rabbit's foot if that would help. My husband would love an excuse to knock off one of the blighters eating his vegetable garden.
Yes, I do believe we have runs of bad luck, but conversely we get good luck runs too - sometimes. I'm hoping yours is about to change for the good variety.

  2. Glad it gave you a giggle, Sue! And, thanks for the offer- but a fake rabbit's foot is more my cup of tea! Hopefully my good luck run is just round the corner! xx

  3. I think some people are just "lucky".
Oh dear, Louisa, sorry about the bad trot.
We have a huge house at the entrance to our street which was one of those prize homes. I bought about 100 tickets in it - a NZ couple who bought 1 ticket won it. And then a few years after that, they won a car also.....
Me on the other hand.... I think I was destined to make "it" the hard way. Or the scenic route if you want to put a glass half full spin on it :-)

  4. Louisa

That really is bad luck but I think some people are just luckier than others and being lucky in love out ways all the other things that happen hoping the rabbits foot helps :)

    Have Fun

  6. I think we all have periods where we have runs of bad luck, but conversely we also seem to have runs of good luck too. In saying that, it does seem like you have had an unusually bad run this week though.

On a positive note, I just spotted your April release on the side bar and don't want to wait until April for it so will be checking the Harlequin site for it tomorrow night and Sunday if its not available tomorrow. <---- I know the Desires and Blazes are available a month early like that.

  9. Oh, Louisa... that's such an awful run of "challenges" that it is funny! Though I'm laughing WITH you! Really! I am!

I hope your faux rabbit's foot brings you good luck - I think you deserve it after the week you've had! On a bright note, such a great post! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi Sharon! Chuckling now too! (Although just about to go toilet shopping, may not feel overly lucky after that ;-))

    2. Louisa, I hope that toilet shopping wasn't too very wince-worthy! With a bit of luck, the model you want will be on a super-special! Fingers crossed for you!

  10. Oh dear, Louisa, what a run of unfortunate circumstances (not bad luck, just...unfortunate events.) I guess I am a little superstitious even when I know that makes no logical sense; I don't like to invoke "the luck Gods" by talking/thinking about bad luck, by stepping on cracks in the footpath, I turn around and bolt from black cats crossing, avoid ladders, yada yada. I read my horoscope (and believe it when it fits, LOL.) I consider myself lucky just about every day, round about when I watch/read the news. But not in the sense of lucky in "winning" out of turn because I'm not -- my mother, on the other hand, is always winning raffles and meat trays.

  11. Hi Bronwyn- you are SO right- compared to many, many people those of us with running water, electricity and our family safe around us are very lucky indeed.

(Still, wouldn't mind the odd win every now and then too though! ;-) ) xx

  12. The toilet fell off the wall? While you were sitting on it!!! OMG, Louisa, you have my heartfelt sympathies...and the plumber wouldn't have been laughing by the time I was finished with him. ;-)

I definitely think it's time for the good luck fairy to pay you a visit.
