'Tis The Season.............

Since Christmas and the holiday season is only a few days away I thought it would be fun to blog about what makes this time of year so special.

Here's my list of favourite Christmas things.......

1) Presents! Well, I had to put this first since, well…it’s Christmas. I don’t normally love shopping. Probably due to the many years I spent working as a retail manager in a department  store. But now I write full time I get to enjoy shopping, and this year have had fun choosing gifts. I love wrapping presents too…I love the bright paper and those little sticky labels

2) Christmas Tree! I love putting up the tree on December 1st. Well, hubby actually puts the tree up and does the lights and then I do the ornaments – which include jewel coloured baubles and cute little red velvet bows. But no tinsel. I remember as a child my parents would hang tinsel ALL over the house. From the picture below you see where one of my cats has been climbing the tree and moving said lights.

3) Food! Is there any time more designed for overeating that Christmas time? The ham, turkey, seafood, trifle….sigh…. I come from Welsh parents and my mother would always cook pork, beef and turkey for Christmas day, even in the sweltering Australian heat. These days we tend to do colder options, but the feastness (that’s a word I just made up) is still the same. Once Christmas and Boxing Day are over I always feel like I’ve been eating non-stop (and probably have) and don’t care if I never see another prawn or slice of ham. Thankfully this feeling wears off.

4) Family! Definitely the best part of Christmas. I live in a small regional town and many members of my extended family are scattered through several states, so some years there’s ten people and other years twenty or thirty. But no matter how many of us get together there’s always plenty of laughter and long talks about Christmases from years gone by.

5) Friends! Equally the best part of Christmas.

6) Pets! It’s no secret I am animal crazy (It’s not like I’m going to end up on that TV show Animal Hoarders or anything) I always get my two outside puppies a special bone-ish treat and my inside dog Samantha has a fabulous festive collar for Christmas Day. I have trialled the cat’s with their red velvet collars but neither were impressed.

7) Presents! Oh, did I cover that already?

Well, since it’s Christmas I have a giveaway from any of my backlists books to one commenter.  Tell me what you love about Christmas and I’ll draw a winner on Monday.

                               Merry Christmas to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I too love all of the above although the shopping is the one thing I like least LOL I have 6 grandchildren and did most of the toy shopping for them online this year it was so much easier :) Mostly I love being with family and friends and the best seeing my grandchildren's faces on Christmas morning when they all arrive at my place and see the presents under the tree and start opening them it is pandemonium but so much fun. The of course we seem to eat all day and we have the traditional Christmas hot lunch no matter how hot the day is we have pork hame chickens sometimes turckey and we also have Christmas pudding and custard yum

    Merry Christmas everyone

    Have Fun

  2. Church singing on Christmas Eve, followed by visits to friends' homes, relaxing while putting out gifts, and then enjoying the days to follow with more friends and family. I feel the spirit of Christmas not just then but many many times throughout the year too....

    1. Hi Laney4 - singing on Christmas Eve sounds wonderful. I can remember a Christmas in Wales when I was young(my parents had taken us back for a holiday) there were carollers at the door....there's something magic about Welsh singers on the doorstep. Have a safe and happy Christmas.

  3. Helen,

Merry Christmas to you too! I love your list of things to enjoy in the festive season. Spending time with family and friends is what makes Christmas special to me. It's also a great time to take stock and really appreciate all the good things we have. I find there's nothing like counting my blessings to put life in perspective.

  5. Carols. I adore Christmas carols -the traditIonal ones. I HATE it when artists try to jazzz them up and "make them their own". Just sing it like it was intended and lets all repeat the sounding joy :-)

  8. Helen, I think "feastness" sums up Christmas lunch beautifully! And I know what you mean about not being able to face another piece of ham! Mind you, I do enjoy the challenge of getting creative with Christmas leftovers! And I've discovered that cooked meat freezes well too so I'm anticipating some stocking of the freezer!

I'm enjoying the Christmas get-togethers and phone-catch-ups-with-overseas friends and family! And I'm loving a bit of creative time in the kitchen with some Christmas baking!

    Merry Christmas, Helen!

    1. Hi Sharon - yes, making leftover's can be fun. I've never tried to do a pudding or cake - rum balls are about all I can manage (not much of a cake cook...more the savoury cook) But I think I might have to change that next year! Have a wonderful Christmas.

  9. I love EVERYTHING about Christmas. I buy gifts all year round, so that's loads of fun. We decorate on the first of December. Our fake tree is covered with all of the ornaments collected over the years. You can't see it's a fake tree once done - you can't see the tree.
