Romantic meets...

Writers are always told...start your story where there is a moment of change. Usually, in a romance, that is the moment the hero and heroine meet for the first time. In all five of my books my hero and heroine meet at work and start out as colleagues. (I guess I need to work on something new now, huh?). Although, they don't always know they're colleagues right at the start ;-)

But this is, apparently, the most common way of meeting a spouse. It's certainly the way I met my hubby. He was a dashing junior doctor and I, a fledgling third year nurse....we met on a medical ward and although it wasn't 'love' at first sight, apparently my husband went home and said to his friends, 'I've just met the girl I'm going to marry' -*sigh* cue cringe-worthy romantic violins.

One thing I like about the work scenario is the 'how do we carry out our liasons and then cope at work on a day-to-day basis?' questions and 'what will happen if we do...and then we break up? How would we work together?'  This can bring a lovely layer to conflict.  (note to anyone single- a junior doctor tends to move round specialties a lot- so there's only a short amount of worry time).

According to this website the second most likely place to meet a 'mate' is through friends. Indeed, in a mini survey of my own friends quite a few were set up on blind dates/ dinner parties etc- but they didn't always end up with the person intended to be their match! Personally I've never acted as a matchmaker- well, except on paper, but I'd love to!

The third most popular place to meet a partner is online. As a writer this brings a zillion wonderful thoughts to mind- but it's possibly worthy of only one book.

So I'm now trying to think of novel and fun ways of getting my characters to meet without being cliched or just downright boring - but it gets harder and harder to be original!

Me and The Doc on our wedding day
Why am I thinking about this today? Well, it's our 19th wedding anniversary today. I guess, in the end, it's not how you meet it's how much love you share. And that's just something that you can only know with time.

To help spread a few more warm fuzzies today, tell me what's the most romantic true get-together story you know? How did you meet your partner? Or have you ever acted as  a matchmaker- and how did that work out?

  1. Hi Louisa,
I met my hubby in a Bridge Club in a small town. One of the guys I worked with taught a few of us to play bridge during our lunchtimes. When we were good enough, he invited us to the club in town. My husband and I were the only people under sixty! Not very romantic - but a different way of meeting :)

  2. Hi Catherine! I think meeting in a bridge club sounds wildly romantic- but then we play bridge too!!!(Although we're more likely to head down the divorce track if I bid the wrong bid LOL!). But it is all a game of hearts (sorry- couldn't resist- bad pun!).

  6. Hi Louisa,

One story that I thought very romantic was a friend of mine from Canada. In her early twenties she went on a whistlestop tour of Europe with a lot of other young people. A couple she kept in contact with and one guy in particular here in Australia became a penpal. After quite a few years corresponding, often about the love lives of others, they decided that maybe they were a 'match'. He went to visit her in Canada to see if it was so. A month later they were married and less than a month later she migrated here and has been here ever since.

  7. Happy anniversary, Louisa! I hope you're planning on bubbles later.

I met my DH through friends and sport -- specifically the kick and giggle of mixed indoor soccer. True love blossomed over drinks at the pub afterwards. ;-)

  8. My father first proposed to my mother when he was 16 and my mother 14. World War II arrived and got in the way of a budding friendship and romance. When my father was stationed in New Guinea for the war, my mother realised that she would miss him terribly if he did NOT come back! My father proposed a second time, almost 10 years after the first. My mother said ‘yes’ and they had their fairytale wedding. Now, 65+ years later, they still hold hands when they are out and about.

  9. I met my husband through a friend (now relative) at a Mexican restaurant called Meg's. I was immediately drawn to his smile and his shoulders. We talked all night. He was supposed to have caught a flight to Sydney for a mate's wedding the day before but he'd been sick. Since that time, I've known him to have taken just one day off work because of illness.
    You gotta love fate~

  10. I met my husband on a Barrier Reef Is when we were both on holidays. He took another week off and came to Brisbane on his way back to Sydney.

We had our 40th wedding anniversary last week.
    A holiday romance that lasted!

  13. Hi Michelle! Well, our romantic anniversary celebration was rather kiboshed by my son inviting 6 x 16 year old friends round to celebrate end of exams. I spent the evening catering and picking up wet towels from the pool! But they are lovely boys and they all wished us a happy anniversary!

As for indoor soccer- wow, that is one wild game. Having watched it a few times I have no idea how you had the energy to make it to the pub!

  17. My parents met on a train while they were both headed back to my dad's hometown in WWII. My uncle walked up and down the train car asking if anyone would take pity on his brother who'd just broken up with his girlfriend and was headed back overseas. My mom took up the offer. They were married a few months later and their marriage lasted for almost 60 years until my mom passed in 2005.

  18. I met my husband at work. I was in charge of a small library attached to my office and he came in to read the newspapers. Then one of my colleagues befriended him and we were both invited to the same house one night. That was it!

  21. Louisa, I love that pic of you and your dashing young doc! And now you've been together for 19 years which is fantastic! Congratulations.

Like you I really enjoy hearing how people meet their spouses... I'm fond of saying that I advertised for my dh... and it's kinda true! A girlfriend and I were setting up in a rental house and we decided to advertise for another person to share. We wanted someone quiet because my friend was a nurse working nightshift and I was working and going to nightschool to finish my degree.

Along came my dh-to-be and while I won't say it was love at first sight, it was definitely connection at first site. We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary last year!
