Favourite Quotes that Inspire Us

If there is one thing a writer needs, besides coffee and chocolate, it is inspiration.  We find it in those aforementioned stimulants. We find it in books, by binging on a favourite TV series, browsing Pinterest, when walking or gardening or sitting in a cafe people-watching.

And we find it in the pithy sayings shared every day on social media and often printed and attached to a pinboard right above our desk.

Today the LoveCats share some of our favourite pieces of inspiration...not only for writing but for life in general.

STEFANIE LONDON:  "We see things not as they are, but as we are."
I love this Anais Nin quote because it reminds me that we all see things through our own lenses of experience, and that not everyone will see things the same as we do. It's like my little self-check to be more understanding of the different opinions that I encounter in life. Trying to be more open minded is never a bad thing, IMO!

SUE MACKAY:  Mine is short and to the point: "No one can stop you if you don't stop yourself." (Man Chen)

AMY ANDREWS: "If you don't have the time to read, you don't have the time or the tools to write." I think Stephen King is a wise guy and I love this quote of his because I think its easy to forget and where a lot of newbie writers get it wrong. My first advice to people asking what they should do to become a writer is always - READ!

Courtesy of Red Tractor Designs

BRONWYN JAMESON: "It always seems impossible until it is done." (Nelson Mandela)
There are many times--many, many times--when I doubt myself and what I am attempting.  This is a reminder to keep trucking on, to push through the barriers, to get to that magical word:  DONE.

BARBARA DELEO:  I can’t find the origin of my favourite so it’ll have to be our old friend Anon:  “Every kick’s a boost!”

YVONNE LINDSAY:  "Some of us think holding on makes us strong; but sometimes it is letting go." (Hermann Hesse)
My quote resonates because it’s a reminder that sometimes when the door you’re knocking on doesn’t open, it’s because there’s another door you should be opening. I tend to get blinkered with an idea of something I want, to the expense of other things that might work better for me.

MICHELLE DOUGLAS: "Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." (Howard Thurman)
I love this quote because it reminds me that there's more to life than making money and doing housework. Obviously, we need to pay the bills, but we need to make time for our passions too…and we shouldn't feel guilty for following them. I'm pretty certain that on my deathbed I'm not going to be saying, "Oh, I wish I'd done more housework." Life is for living. This quote inspires me to continue living my life as fully as I know how.

KANDY SHEPHERD:  "Just do it."
My favourite inspirational quote for writers came to me via my husband who stuck the Nike quote on the pinboard above my desk. I am a born procrastinator so this quote is particularly apt for me. It’s such good advice! (That’s not to say that I always follow it!)

ANNIE WEST:   "Day by day, what you choose, what you think and what you do is who you become." (Heraclitus)
I saw this recently and it appealed to me enormously, I suppose because it’s a reminder that we hold so much in our own hands, if only we take to time to think about what we do and how we choose to live.

Do you have a favourite quote that informs your life at the moment?  Do you "collect" quotes and inspirational messages?  Do they help you, inspire you, motivate you?

CATWALK - Adventures of Crystal and the Baby Possum!

Picture No. 1

I'm so delighted to bring a very unusual rescue story to the CATWALK today!

Towards the end of spring last year, we had a severe windstorm that affected many areas of Victoria.  This is the experience our friend, Norm, shared with us after the gales...
"I was out for a walk around 7:30am with our miniature poodles, Crystal & Pearl.  They were sniffing everything as usual when a baby ringtail possum peeked out from under a bush - then tentatively approached.
Crystal leaned forward to gently sniff the arrival.  That presented her ear tresses as an excellent ladder and the little possum climbed to the top of her head then onto her back.  Poor Crystal was initially concerned but I settled her down and she decided her unexpected passenger was acceptable.  The possum bub seemed much happier riding around than on the ground and I suspect Crystal's litters of pups predisposed her to accepting something small hanging on.
Mother Possum was nowhere to be seen.  I guess the little possum fell off his transport during the night in the high winds.  He appeared to be unhurt and in excellent health and was collected by a Wildlife Rescue person later in the day."
Anyone got a caption they'd like to share for any of these gorgeous pics?

On The CATWALK!

with Sharon Archer

Today, I've got a Catwalk model that's just a bit different!
Meet Helen Lacey's adorable Ginger!

Over to you, Ginger!

Name
Ginger

Abode
Big paddock behind my human slave’s house. I have to share it with four horses.

Human Slave
Helen and Hubby

Likes
Well, I like food.

Dislikes
the birds that swoop me, especially the Plovers.

Ambition
to keep eating all the food I can.

Sociable or Aloof
I’m very sociable and I love big cuddles

 Night Owl or Early Bird
I like to walk around at night because it’s cooler. I sleep during the day.

Favourite Pastime
Sleeping Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Favourite Toy
There are some barrels in my paddock that my human slaves race around sometimes when they’re riding the horses. I like to scratch my head on them. But they usually fall over when I do this. Shhhh . . . don’t tell that’s it’s me doing it. They think it’s the horses.

Best Friend
my best friends are my human slaves. I’m not so keen on the horses I share my paddock with. Because young Calvin runs around like a mad thing, and tries to steal my hay.

What do you like to sharpen your claws on?
If I had claws I think I might sharpen them on Calvin!

Most embarrassing moment
Well, I walk pretty slow. Actually, I walk really slow. That’s because I’ve been around a while. So when my human slaves call me to the fence because someone wants to pat me, it takes ages for me to get there. That's pretty embarrassing. Especially when I can hear them saying “poor old thing”. But speed isn’t everything! Good looks count too!

Lovely to get a different perspective on the Catwalk, Ginger!   I have to say you're a wonderfully calm, placid cow - not like the spooky bovine boys that live next door to us!

CATWALK Caption Contest!

Zeus!  Wonder Dog!

(Helene Young's Super Pooch Visits with Sharon Archer!)

CAPTION ME TO WIN!
I feel very privileged to be hosting award-winning author, Helene Young's wonder dog, Zeus, on the LoveCats' CATWALK, today.  He's very generously offering a copy of Helene's latest release with Penguin Australia,  Burning Lies, to one of our clever captioners!

More details at the bottom of our post but for now, the spotlight's on you, Zeus!

Name: Zeus the Wonder Staffie

Abode:
Beanbag. Oh sorry, did you mean Tropical North Queensland where it's beautiful one day, perfect the next?

Human Slave:
Slave? That's a cat thing. I prefer to call them 'special friends' - it's more inclusive. Graham is good fun, but Helene is quite wonderful.

Likes:
The beach (but who doesn't!)

Dislikes:
Little white fluffy dogs - especially when they yap.

Ambition:
Justice for all animals (except little white fluffy dogs...)

Sociable or Aloof:
I'm very sociable, but it's important to choose friends and colleagues carefully so a quick lick of their knees normally sorts them out.

Night Owl or Early Bird:
Early bird but really only because my 'friends' work best at that time.

Favourite Pastime:
Swimming, giving my 'friends' exercise by letting them throw sticks for me, playing on the beach.

Favourite Toy:
Tennis balls (I have around 50 in my collection from the local tennis park!)

Best Friend:
Charity - she's a sweet eight year old human who lives up the hill and comes swimming in my pool with me.

What do you like to sharpen your claws on:
Oh dear, that's so cattie... I like to keep my claws neat and trim and I find walking on the edge of gutters and footpaths does that quite nicely.

Most embarrassing moment:
I don't do embarrassing, only heroic, and modesty prevents me from sharing :-D

Bravo, Zeus!  It's been great to have you with us!

I can't wait to read the captions for your picture - you look so adorable on that heart-covered cushion!

Here's more about Helene's next exciting romantic suspense...

Burning Lies!

Kaitlyn Scott is searching for the truth about her husband’s death, even if that means revisiting the most painful day of her life. But what she uncovers is a criminal willing to stop at nothing to keep his secret.

Ryan O’Donnell, an enigmatic undercover cop, is investigating arson attacks when he is drawn into Kaitlyn’s world. He tries to fight his attraction for her, hoping the case might put his own demons to rest, but it only threatens to push him over the edge.

With Kaitlyn and Ryan on a collision course, the arsonist seizes the chance to settle some old scores. As the Atherton Tableland burns, the three of them are caught in a fiery dance of danger and desire, and not everyone will come out alive.

CATWALK - Caption Contest!

Bronwyn Parry's Tansy and Skye!

... strutting on the CATWALK with Sharon Archer

Name:

Tansy: I’m Tansy, and I’ve been here forever. The little one is the Squirmy-Wirmy-Always-in-My-Face puppy. I call her Sqwamf for short.

Skye: I am not Sqwamf! My name’s Skye, and I’m cute and playful and adorable and I’m not really a puppy anymore ‘cos I’ve had a birthday and I’m all growed up now. Even if I am still littler than you.

Human Slaves:

Skye: Bron and Gordon. We’re Border Collies, and Tansy trained them pretty well before I came, but I’ve been teaching them some new games, too.

Abode:

Tansy: We’d like to live in the Really Big Kennel with Bron and Gordon all the time, but they insist on us going out into the dog run sometimes. It’s big enough to race around in (I don’t run around so much anymore, but the Sqwamf dashes around like a maniac), and there are our kennels and trees and possums and cheeky birds that swim in our water bowls, and we’re out in the bush so it’s quiet and peaceful. However, we like our baskets and mats in the Really Big Kennel best.

Likes:

Tansy: Sitting next to Bron and getting my back rubbed. That’s something it was easy to train her to do. I also love when she makes pork with a mango sauce, ‘cos she gives us some in our bowls, and mango is my Favouritest. Food. Ever. (I think she should get two mangoes instead of one, so I can have a bigger share.)

Skye: Toys! Playing! Running! I love to run with Gordon in the morning – we go all the way down the driveway and right out onto the road and along it for miles and miles, and then we turn around and run back again. I love running in the dog run, too: it’s huge – almost as big as a paddock – and I dash from one corner to the opposite one, and then around and about the trees, and then as fast as I can right around the fence.

Dislikes:

Tansy: Being outside in the dog run when there’s a thunderstorm. But fortunately we’ve taught Bron and Gordon to bring us inside – that is, if they’re home. Just as well Bron works at home most of the time.

Ambition:

Tansy: One day, Bron will have the sense to put two Border Collies in a book, who save the hero and heroine from certain death. It’s going to be so good it will be a blockbuster film and we’ll star in it. I’ve already picked my screen name – Tangelina Collie – and I’ll play the wiser, smarter canine heroine.

Skye: And I’ll be the cheeky young sidekick who sniffs out the bad guys. How about Skylie Mynose as an actress name, huh? I can bounce around and bark and I’ve got a very sexy little butt-wiggle 

Tansy: You and your butt-wiggle. Life’s not all about attracting the boys, you know.

Skye: Ha! I know about you and the dingo. I’ve seen the way that you look at him when he comes snooping around.

Tansy: Yes, well, looking is all we do. He may be the strong, silent type, but he’s also a wild, rebel lad from the wrong side of the taxonomy. He was never going to settle for a pink food bowl and a comfy basket in the living room, that’s for sure.

Skye: You never know... Hey, don’t give me that look. Bron writes romance. It radiates from her computer, so of course I believe in happy endings.

Sociable or Aloof:

Skye: Well, Tansy can be aloof sometimes – I think she’s brooding about the dingo – but I LOVE playing with others. I make sure that Bron doesn’t spend too long at her computer. I reminder her whenever it’s Play o’clock – which it is several times each afternoon. And I make her get up at Walk o’clock and Food o’clock, too. We’re out in the bush and don’t get many visitors (not of the human variety anyway) so we always get very excited when two-legged ones come, and we bounce and bark and bark and bounce and lick and bounce some more.

Night Owl or Early Bird:

Tansy: The night owls hoot in the trees above us, and the day-birds start twittering (and splashing in our water bowls) at dawn. But if we’re allowed to sleep inside the Really Big Kennel, we’re very, very quiet and don’t wake up the humans... except for the time Gordon was away, and a Masked Owl was hunting right outside the house, and I absolutely HAD to go outside at Dark o’clock to chase it away. ‘Cos I had to protect Bron from it, didn’t I?

Favourite Pastime:

Tansy: Sitting beside Bron and getting my back rubbed. And going for walks with her and sniffing all the interesting sniffs and eating blackberries.

Skye: Running! Playing! And wriggling on my back while playing with my toys, ‘cos I’m really good at holding them between my paws.

Favourite Toy:

Tansy: Ted is my favourite toy, but because the Sqwamf always steals him and tries to chew his head off, I don’t get to play with him much now. He sits on a shelf, but sometimes Bron gets him down so I can have a snuggle and a lick.

Skye: I love all my toys! I mean, a girl can never have too many toys, right? I love my squeaky toys, and the ball that jingles when I roll it, and my soft toys with ears and tails to rip off, and my ropes to play tug of war with, and my doggy Frisbee - I’d like to chew that, but Bron insists on throwing it. And I especially, especially love to pull the stuffing out of our doggy cushions and spread it all over the floor. That is SO much fun!

Best Friend:

Tansy: Bron & Gordon are my best friends. I’ve been with them since I was a little, tiny, fluffy puppy, with my blonde sister. She got sick and isn’t here anymore, and I’m still getting used to the Sqwamf. But I love Bron & Gordon and I lick them lots and lots so that they know they are mine.

Skye: Tansy’s my best friend. She’s just not quite convinced of it, yet. She can be a bit growly sometimes when I lick her face and snuggle up to her, but underneath I know she really likes having me around.

What do you like to sharpen your claws on:

Tansy: We’re not cats, so we’re not obsessive about our nails.

Most embarrassing moment:

CAPTION ME TO WIN!
Skye: When Bron snapped this photo while I was sleeping:

Tansy: I bet she’s going to embarrass you even further by tempting people to write a caption for it, and offering a copy of her latest book as a prize for the best one.

Skye: She wouldn’t really, would she? Maybe people won’t enter, ‘cos there’s no Border Collies in the book.

Tansy: Well, there is a dingo. Not that he’s the hero, or anything. But I bet if she wrote a book with Border Collies in it, she’d become a best-smelling author.

Skye: Even better-smelling than she is now?

Tansy: Even better-smelling than when she walks uphill with us on a hot day. Come on, she’s starting her next book - let’s go sit at her feet and look intelligent and cute and make her realize that her new hero really, really needs a couple of Border Collies.

So cool to have Tansy and Skye visit, Bronwyn!  Thank you!

Bronwyn and Tansy and Skye are giving away a copy of Bronwyn's latest book to one lucky captioner!   An awesome prize!

Here's the cover and backcover details...

Dead Heat by Bronwyn Parry

Backcover:
National Parks Ranger Jo Lockwood is often alone in the wilderness, and she likes it that way – until she discovers the body of a man, brutally murdered.

Detective Nick Matheson’s new posting to the north-west of New South Wales is supposed to be an uneventful return to normal duties and a normal life. He knows organised crime from the inside out and suspects that the victim in the camping ground is not an isolated murder.

Jo is committed to helping the investigation but she has seen the killer’s face and now she’s at risk. Nick’s determined to protect her but as the body count starts mounting, his past and present collide, threatening the people he cares about most.

Trapped in rugged country in scorching summer heat, pursued by hunters who can’t afford to fail, Nick and Jo will need to trust each other completely, and use all their skills and knowledge in order to survive.

CATWALK - Caption Contest!

Kate Walker's Flora and Charlie

... cats on the mat for a chat with Sharon Archer

CAPTION ME!

Or CAPTION ME!

Today on the LoveCats CATWALK, I'm featuring Harlequin Mills and Boon Presents author Kate Walker with her gorgeous Maine Coons, Flora and Charlie!  Take it away, you handsome felines...

Names
Flora (Princess Flora Flooziebelle) – the glorious grey and
Charlie  (Charlie Rumpuss) the ginger ninja

Abode
‘The Cat House’   c/o Kate Walker Lincolnshire UK

Human Slave
You will know her as Kate Walker but to us she’s just Our Mum. There’s Our Dad too – known as the Babe Magnet

Likes :

Flora – Peace from ‘that boy’ Charlie.  Lying in front of the fire. Not being pounced on.  Salmon and trout ‘sticks’ treats. Being told I’m beautiful – I know I am but it doesn’t hurt to have it emphasised
Charlie : Teatime’ (which can mean breakfast time or lunch time  - or teatime – but ‘Teatime’ means the bowl is being filled.)Taking up all the room on the sofa/bed/rug/firespot. Pouncing on Flora. Running wild in the garden and dashing up tree. Biting my Dad’s toes

Dislikes:

Flora – being pounced on by Charlie. The White Stuff – you call it  Snow (I once went out into the garden, jumped on to the lawn and disappeared in a snowdrift. I disappeared and as a Maine Coon I am a big cat. All My Mum could see was the tip of my tail.)
Charlie – Not being let pounce on Flora. Not being first to the food bowls. Rain.  (You’ve seen my long coat – it absorbs a lot of water. ) My Mum always says I look like a drowned rat when I come in out of the rain. Oh and when My Dad starts playing his guitar – then I give him a real mouthful of complaints and  walk out of the room.

Ambition:

Flora – I don’t need an ambition – I am purrfection as you can see

Charlie – To catch one of those fluttery things Mum calls birds.  She puts stuff out on the bird table so I get up there to try to catch open (see my caption photo above)  but somehow they seem to know I’m there – I’m not sure why. Oh, and to eat lots

 Sociable or Aloof

Flora – It depends who has the treats.  I like visitors but they do need to treat me with respect – and have treats ready to hand
Charlie – I’ll be pals with anyone  -- specially if they’ve got treats

Night Owl or Early Bird?

Flora –  I don’t mind really – I rarely need to trouble about waking the slaves to let me put – I leave that to Charlie. Then I can go out or not as I please. But if Blackie from down the road comes into the garden then  I try to get out to be with him
Charlie-  Both – I’d be out in the garden all day if I could and spend all night on the razz out there too. But Mum insists I come in when it’s dark – spoilsport. So I’m also an early bird – at about 5.30, I go in and scratch on the wardrobe like a loony, letting them know I want to go out NOW
Favourite Pastime

Flora :  Trying to steal treats when Dad’s not looking
Charlie : Eating. Pouncing on Flora’s tail. Being in the garden and climbing trees. Bringing in a collection of stuff from the garden – leaves, twigs, mud, flower petals, all attached to my fur

Favourite Toy:

Flora:  Chasing treats  and pouncing on leaves – I also like to get high on catnip
Charlie: Flora’s tail – and my ball in table game – and those fluttery things

Best Friend:

Flora  - It depends who has the treats but really it’s My Mum. ( I do like to go and sit on her knee when she’s on the loo but she says I haven’t to tell you that!) Definitely not that boy Charlie.
Charlie:  My Mum – specially when she has the food tin and the can opener in her hand.

What do you like to sharpen your claws on

Flora: Tree trunks if  outside  but my scratching post will do
Charlie: Flora’s tail, tree trunks, the side of the cat kennel, the side of the shed  . . .anywhere I can find really. The scratching post? Oh is that what that’s for

Most embarrassing moment

Flora: I don’t do embarrassing – but the snowdrift moment was a  little – disconcerting
Charlie: The ‘drowned rat’  wasn’t fun – but I don’t embarrass easily

So get busy with those captions to be in the running to win Kate's latest book!   Charlie and Flora are in charge of picking their winner!

The Devil and Miss Jones

by Kate Walker

CATWALK - Caption Contest!

 Fiona Lowe's Pekoe!

with Sharon Archer

 CAPTION ME TO WIN!

Today on the LoveCats Catwalk we're featuring author
Fiona Lowe's beautiful bundle of mischief! And as an extra treat, Fiona's generously giving away a copy of a Christmas romance, her Mills & Boon Medical Romance, The Most Magical Gift of All, to one of our clever captioners!  Details at the bottom of the post...  But for now...

Take it away, Pekoe!

 Name
Pekoe because I am a  ginger cat and white cat. I heard the family throwing around a variety of names from Cumquat and Marmalade to Shandy but then the Big Dad said, what about  Orange Pekoe. They dropped the orange and I get Peeks for short or the Peekganter for long or often I get called ‘NO!’ and sprayed with water.

Abode
I have heard my cat tree called ‘The Hilton’

 Human Slave
All four Lowes and any visiting persons

Likes
chasing super light balls and toilet rolls

 Dislikes
One litter tray. I require two. One for each business, I mean, really who would mix it.

Ambition
To advance beyond a series of closed doors.

Sociable or Aloof
I greet everyone each morning with lots of hellos and I spend the day with Big Mum if she is in the office. At night I am often busy chasing things but when I am weary I like to sit under a chair or sit on a lap. Right now I am sleeping behind Big Mum on the chair.

Night Owl or Early Bird
I wake up when the house wakes up and I go to bed when the house goes to bed….at least that’s what the Lowe’s think when they close the doors at night.

What do you like to sharpen your claws on?
I have a cat tree. If I try other things I get called ‘NO’ and sprayed with water

Most embarrassing moment
Getting locked in the pantry.

So get busy with those captions for Pekoe's first photograph to be in the running to win Fiona's gorgeous Christmas book!

On the CATWALK!

with Sharon Archer

Strutting her stuff on the Catwalk today, I have author
Patti Shenberger's gorgeous bundle of energy!

Please welcome Sophie!

 Name
Sophie, though when I was at the shelter it was Callista. I was adopted from the Michigan Animal Rescue League.

Abode
A nice warm bed and a three acre fenced in backyard to roam (not unattended, but there will come a day when I can check out that bichon next door.

Human Slave
My  mom Patti.  She calls me her Sophie Bug and kisses me lots and lets me take naps on her lap during the day.  I just love that!

Likes
I love my bed and all the new toys.  I have a stuffed frog that squeaks and a big pink squeaky bone to play with as well.

Dislikes
I am not impressed when we go out at 3:30 a.m. and the grass is frozen.  My toes get cold and because I'm so low to the ground that frozen grass really tickles the private parts!

Ambition
I want to grow up big and strong like the Bouvier across the street.  She's allowed to cross the road all by herself  (Sophie's Mom here - we do live on a gravel dead end road at the way back of a neighborhood.  Regardless, Sophie is too little to cross the street!)

Sociable or Aloof
Very sociable.  Except the cat was not impressed when I grabbed his tail and held on so he could drag me around the kitchen.

Night Owl or Early Bird
I'm an early bird.  I go to bed about 9:30, have to get up only once so far to go out, and sleep till about 6.  Then the day begins and I get to play with all my toys and annoy the cat.

Favourite Pastime
Taking naps on Mom's lap cause she whispers in my ear and it tickles.

Favourite Toy
Ace, the 6 yr old cat.  Dad says he really belongs to him though and I'm Mom's.   Though Ace seems to think he can smack me on the head with his front declawed paws and I'll go away.  Little does he know!

Best Friend
Hmm, not sure.  So far it's Mom.

What do you like to sharpen your claws on?
It's not my claws they have to worry about.   It's my needle teeth.  Mom made a really weird sound the other day when I accidentally (I swear it wasn't on purpose) bit her thigh.

Most embarrassing moment
That's easy.  I learned how to climb the steps to the deck the second day but had a slight problem with the dismount.  So I did a sort of kamakazi, throw myself off the deck move and ended up getting grass up my nose.  Not real fun.

Patti, thank you for letting adorable Sophie out to play on the Catwalk!
