As some of you know I teach at a
Queensland university. This term I’m teaching a course that involves looking at
lots of difference genres of books such as crime, romance, historical, sci-fi
and more. I’ve been interviewing authors within the different genres to give
students insight into what it is like to write in each of these genres.
I’ve learned some fascinating
things along the way and it has highlighted some things I hadn’t thought about
before. For example, what responsibilities do you have if you write for a
younger audience? If you write historicals that are based on real people, what
facts do you include in the story and what can you fictionalise? How do you go
about researching these peoples’ lives? Each author I’ve interviewed has been
so generous with their time and their advice.
I read across lots of genres with
favourites being romance (obviously), crime (I’m a massive Jane Harper and
Michael Connelly fan), women’s fiction (I want to be Liane Moriarty), literary,
some historical, some fantasy, the occasional YA and more.
Do you read across genres? I’d
love to know what your favourites are?
I'm with you, Jen -- I like to read widely too. But especially romance, women's fiction, and a little literary fiction when the mood takes me. There are *so* many good books to read. :-)
ReplyDeleteSo many good books...so little time, Michelle.
DeleteI will admit that romances are my favorites, especially medical or Western. My life is stressful enough without having to think about clues and timelines,I started out reading historical novels, will occasionally read one. Don't care for paranormal romances
DeleteHi Jennifer
ReplyDeleteWOW that sounds like a very interesting class you are teaching, for me romance is my favourite historical, contemporary and I do love a time slip and I love woman's fiction and cozy mysteries so I read a lot as well :)
Have Fun
Helen
I've joined a book club this year to get me to read across genres, Jennifer. Mostly they've been misses for me but The Dry was one of them which I loved!
ReplyDeleteI love my bookclub for that reason, Amy. Gets me reading things I either wouldn't normally, or know I should but without the bookclub, I wouldn't find the time.
