On the Road Again

Two weeks ago my DB and I headed down to Christchurch to spend a few days with the grandies and family. It is a trip we do often.
Usually it is a four and a half drive through Blenheim and Kaikoura along a stunning coastline.
This time we had to go to Nelson first so that added an hour to the trip, but it also meant we drove down the centre of the South Island, which was a nice change.
I apologise for being a hopeless photographer, and add in sitting in travelling car and here's the result, but they give you the idea.

Once over the pass we head towards Hanmer, a beautiful Alpine Village.

Heading up the beginning the Lewis Pass,  a stretch of road often closed due to snow. None for us that day.

It's quite isolated through here with farmhouses scattered along the way kilometres apart.
I've twice ridden the Rainbow Rage bike challenge which runs behind these mountains on the right.

On the return trip we follow the coastline before and after Kaikoura. This area is popular with tourists stopping to see the seal colonies.

The mountainous backdrop to Kaikoura township.
This is one of my favourite areas of the country geographically with the sea and the mountains so close. It also gets extreme weather which isn't so good.

I love getting out and about in our country. There's so much to see and the views are always changing.
Next month we're heading to the North Island on a two week road trip. I'll try to take better photos. :)
What's the trick to taking reasonable pictures? Apart from asking the DB to stop the car when he's just overtaken an annoying driver!

  2. LOL Helen, I always forget to take photos at events. I'm hoping to do better now that I've got a 'real' phone, my daughter's hand me down which is not that old at all.

  3. I've no photo tips either, Sue -- I'm basically a point and click gal. But it's hard to go wrong with such gorgeous scenery! I'm thinking that particular road trip wouldn't be too hard to take on a regular basis either. :-)

    1. Especially when there are two little cuties at the other, Michelle. We are pretty lucky in NZ that we're small and don't have to drive forever to see lots of wonderful scenery.

  4. Looks like a beautiful drive! I have no idea about taking good photos - I often forget to use my camera and just snap away on my phone instead.

    1. I used the camera one way and the phone on the way home, and think there is a difference, camera being clearer. But as I usually forget to take that that point's redundant. :)

  5. I think you did pretty well there, Sue!

  6. Sue, some great photos. It looks like a terrific trip. I rarely take photos from the car. I'll have to try it!

    1. This was the first time I've tried it, Annie. Somehow I'd get a good picture lined up and Linds would drive past a darned tree as I pushed the button. Made for an interesting trip and kept me from getting bored.

  8. Sue, you're not doing badly at all! I love your pics.

I generally take about a dozen photos of the same thing and hope like crazy that one of them will be worth keeping when I go back through them and cull out the really bad ones!

    1. Oh yeah, Yvonne. What would we do if not for delete buttons. Remember when we had to get photos printed and then found they were terrible? So glad that doesn't happen any more.

  9. Hi Sue, those photos look fine to me! They brought back memories from many years ago on my one and only trip to the South Island. It must have been around Kaikoura somewhere that I stopped and marvelled at the sight of snow capped mountains and gorgeous sea together. It was summer and I was mesmerised at the beauty of if. I must go back to New Zealand! Regarding photos, I have a wonderful "big" camera, but since I've had my iPhone I use it all the time.

    1. Thanks, Kandy. While we were in Christchurch my daughter gave me her old - quite new really - iPhone and that's what I used on the way home. Quite impressed with how easy it is to take photos with it.

  10. I'm another saying you took reasonable photos - I would have ended up with lots of blurriness. The pictures did remind me that I need to see more of NZ though (it's embarassing as a Kiwi, how little of the country I've actually seen)
