I'm leaving on a jet plan

By the time this post goes up I will be back in Australia! It’s been almost two years since I left Melbourne to move to Toronto – crazy how fast the time flies. This trip back is just a visit, but I’ll be home for a whole month.

I figure if I’m going to spend 30 hours travelling across the globe I may as well make the most of it. Luckily, my books can be written anywhere so long as I have my laptop with me.

Living far away from home has made so grateful to have tools like Skype, WhatsApp and Viber which allow me to keep in touch with my family and friends. In fact, we have a Skype camera situated on the top of our TV so we can chill on the couch and talk to people just like they were right there in the apartment with us. But there’s nothing quite like the face-to-face.

So, in light of my plans I thought I’d share some of the things I want to do when I return home.
Cici the Chihuahua & her latest victim

Spend time with my family and family
This is kind of an obvious one, but I miss everyone so much. Lots of quality time is in order. Little sis and I have a date to play videos games together just like when we were kids.

Getting cuddles from this little lady --->
This crazy Chihuahua is high up on my priority list. When I lived at my parent’s place for two months before the big move, we became very close and I have missed her dearly.

Drink all of the coffee
I know I lamented this often, but the coffee in Canada is just not the same as what we have back home. I plan to café hop my way around the city as much as possible.

Wander around the city
I lived in Southbank for four years before we moved to Toronto, and one of my favourite activities was talking a walk through the city early on a Saturday or Sunday morning. I’d get a coffee from any place that was open and just enjoy the peacefulness of a city still sleeping.

Talk to my fellow writers
I’m so excited to catch up with my old writer’s group, the Melbourne Romance Writer’s Guild. In fact, I am actually going to be speaking at their annual writer’s retreat, which is so exciting!

Back in 2013 I attended this same retreat as a newly aspiring author with so much to learn. I’d only been writing for about six months and I listened to fellow LoveCat Annie West and the awesome Anna Campbell speak about their incredible careers.

I was so inspired, and both Annie and Anna gave me the encouragement to believe in my work. I can’t wait to be able to pay it forward.

What would you miss most about your home if you moved overseas?

  1. Hi Stefanie

I am so glad you are home for a visit I just wished I was in Melbourne so as we could have coffee :) I am sure you are going to have a ball catching up with everyone.

For me I think I would miss the same things as you do family and friends just the way things are done and the food and drinks that are all probably a little different to what we are used to.

    Have Fun
    Helen

  2. Sounds like you have a lot of planned for your time at home.
Personally, the main thing I miss whenever I've left NZ is the green nature.
I think that if I spent a fair amount of time away from Wellington, I'd miss the parts of the weather that I currently dislike at times such as wind and rain.

  3. I m
issed family and close friends the most when I lived in Canada. Funny but I learned to drink coffee there but agree with you it doesn't stack up to what we have back in Australia and NZ. Have a wonderful time catching up with everyone.

    1. Thanks Sue! I still drink coffee over there (can't take my caffeine away all together!) but I am so enjoying that aspect of being home :D

  4. Sounds like you have a lot of fun planned while you're back home, Stef! I hope you have a ball...and that the time doesn't fly too quickly. :-)

If I moved to Canada (and OMG I can't believe you've been there for 2 whole years!) I'd miss the beach. I know they have beaches in Canada, and I know they even get summer, but it still wouldn't be the same. ;-)

    1. The time is speeding past, I've been home a week already - gaah! Where does it go??

Oh yes, the beach. We're so very spoiled in these parts of the world :)

  5. Stef, how lovely that you'll have time to spend with family and friends and other writers and, yes, catch up with some coffee! Welcome back.

I remember that out-of-Melbourne retreat with great fondness too. Such an absolute treat to spend time getting to know other passionate writers!

  6. For me it's always family. Occasionally, with my husband's work, we've been away for up to 7 weeks at a time. I'm so fortunate that my work is transportable to wherever we're staying but I miss my girls and the rest of my family so very much. Skype and other apps are wonderful but there's nothing like actually being together, is there?
