Later this week I’m off to Bali and I could not be more excited. Not because I’m leaving behind the wet winter weather (although that doesn’t make me at all sad) and not because of the location because, to be honest, I’ve never wanted to visit Bali particularly (although the resort does look a bit of all right!) Nope, I’m excited because of the reason behind the trip.
Destination: Florence |
Three things I totally love:
In this case my nephew and his bride-to-be are marrying, not quite on the beach, but with an ocean backdrop. As far as weddings go, it’s a small, relaxed event with all the guests staying on site for three days/nights. I envisage much lounging by the pool, much eating of fine food, many conversations late into the night, much laughter.
- Weddings
- Travel
- Spending time with family
Have you noticed that they’ve become something of thing lately? Or perhaps I’ve only noticed this lately because I’m at an age where all my nieces and nephews are getting married. And instead of the traditional marriage in the bride’s hometown or even the town/city where the couple now live, more are choosing a location based on the style of wedding they want. Outdoors. Rustic. Beach. Vineyard. Resort. Whatever.
Destination: Rural Australia |

Have I mentioned how much I love a destination wedding where you don’t need to designate a driver, where you stumble home to bed in bare feet (probably sore from dancing), where you stumble out of bed the next morning and get to hang out with the same awesome folk for another day or two?
We leave Thursday. I cannot wait.
What’s the most-fun wedding you’ve been to recently? Was it held locally or did you travel to a cool destination?
Oh, wow! Like you I've never really wanted to vacation in Bali but the idea of the wedding/vacation sounds sublime! Might suggest it in our family. :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy and safe travels, Bron, and have a ball!
Good luck with that, Yvonne! I prodded #1 Son in this direction but they resisted!! As well as the relaxing location, I love that everything is organised by the planners. No stress for the couple or the parents. Just turn up and party!!!
DeleteThat sounds like such fun, Bron! Oh, there's no doubt about it -- you're going to have a brilliant time. Can't wait to see your pics. :-)
ReplyDeleteI've never been to a destination wedding. In fact, it's been years since I've been to a wedding. Now, though, I really really want to go to one. Or maybe I can write about one instead. :-)
I vote you write one, Michelle. So many options, so many potential twists, so much romance, so so much potential for conflict. And who doesn't love to read a wedding book???
DeleteOh- colour me very jealous! I love traveling and Bali is on my list of must-sees! I was recently at a wedding in a vineyard on Waiheke Island (which is not at all far from central Auckland, but when you have to cross the water by boat it makes you feel as if you're going on holiday!). We had three days of partying and it was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThe best destination wedding I went to, however, was in Goa, India 20 years ago- 42 of us traveled over to the groom's village which was very close to a resort with gorgeous beaches. The bride was Irish, so the music after the ceremony was all fiddles and jigs. It was awesome- two weeks with a ready made party every day!
Enjoy- and make sure you take lots of pictures to share with us when you get back!
Oh, Louisa, that Goa wedding sounds wonderful! Irish meats Indian: you should totally let this inspire a book. I would eat that up.
DeleteAnd the size sounds similar to this one, although ours will have more of a Belgian flavour.
Bron, I bet you have a ball and enjoy every minute. I've never been to a destination wedding but I'd love to. In fact, I've just realised it's a while since I've been to a wedding. Hope to get to a nice one soon!
ReplyDeleteThat's the thing with weddings; there's a drought for years and years and suddenly they happen one on top of the next. And they are always wonderful!!!
DeleteHi Bronwyn
ReplyDeleteSounds like it is going to be lots of fun and I have never been to a destination wedding either but maybe one da although I have been invited to a friends wedding on a cruise sadly I couldn't make it but then I have had tree of my children get married in the last three years Nov 2013 March 2014 and July 2015 yes last month and it was small and lovely with a camel in the background and about 5 ducks walking behind the gazebo they were getting married in such a good day as all of them were. I am sure you are going to have lots of fun
Have Fun
Helen
Helen, I'm sitting her smiling because I read your comment right after replying to Annie about how weddings can come along one after the next. Just like with your children. I adore the image in my mind of the camel and ducks photo-bombing the wedding pictures -- I think that should go in a book!!!
DeleteSounds like you are going to have an amazing time, Bron. Wishing you the best tie and rip up that dance floor!! Looking forward to seeing the pictures upon your return.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jen. I can assure you that there will be no pictorial evidence of me on the dance-floor. What happens in Bali, stays in Bali!
DeleteLove those pics, Bron!
ReplyDeleteThe last wedding I went to was held nearby at a local winery but the really exciting part was that as the bride and groom hail from further north, the bride and her 7! bridesmaids and flowergirls used our house to get ready that day and have a bunch of photos taken. It was a whirlwind day, an absolute flurry of activity, a happy joyous occasion to be part of!
Destination Bali looks slightly more relaxing though :-)
A whirlwind, yes, but I bet it was totally fun being in the eye of that cyclone. That's the thing about weddings: they're so much more than the ceremony, the speeches, the traditions. There is so much prep, so many stories, so much MORE that goes together to make the whole. I guess that's why the wedding stories are so popular!
ReplyDeleteHave fun in Bali, Bron! I hope everything goes smoothly with the wedding!
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to a destination wedding - in fact, I haven't been to a full on formal wedding for ages come to think about it. The son of a friend got married recently - very informal and beautifully done. They invited friends and family to their engagement party. Then brought out the celebrant and tied the knot.
Oooh, was that a surprise wedding Sharon? I *LOVE* those -- well, I've only been to one, but it was such fun. We were invited to celebrate a special birthday but when we rocked up, we discovered it was a wedding for the birthday girl!!!
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to a wedding in quite a while. The most recent was about a year and a half ago - sadly we've already missed on being in Canada at the moment, but it's so expensive to fly home :(
