My Favourite Things......

By Helen Lacey

I was talking to a friend the other day about things we cherished – things that made us smile, laugh or simply feel good. Like family and friends, our pets, that holiday of a lifetime, the sound of rain on a tin roof. So I had a thought about what were my five favourite things and came up with this list (I’ve left family off this list since that’s a given)

1/ Friends …. This is my writing group and we've been together for 23 years. We don’t get together as much as we used to since we all in different places at the moment, but we catch up as often as we can and have become firm friends. From left - Lesley Millar, Laura O'Connell, Me, Helen Bianchin, CC Coburn & Louise Cusack.

2/ My horse Zeb…..we’ve been together for six years and I love him to pieces.

3/ The shoreline where I live…..I live on the east coast of Australia at the most southern point of the Great Barrier Reef and it’s a beautiful spot. I never tire of walking my dogs along the beach.

4/ My collectibles….. I love fine china and I collect pink glass. I just love scouring antique stores and yard sales for pink pieces. Here's a pic of some of my little treasures.

5/ Books....I love books! Particularly category romance books. I read my first Mills & Boon novel when I was eleven...there were two I read and I was hooked - Bride At Whangatapu by Robyn Donald and Winds Of Enchantment by Rosalind Brett. Since then I've read hundreds and here is a picture of a some of my all time favourites.

So, what’s on your list?

  1. I loved seeing your favourite things, Helen, especially your gorgeous pink glass collection.

Apart from my friends and family, I guess my favourite things are: my mini schnauzer Cosmo, the engagement ring that my husband bought for me at a beautiful store in Athens, and all the photos and movies we took on the three month trip we had to Greece and Cyprus a couple of years ago with four kids and grandparents in tow.

  2. I love this post, Helen! As it happens I was shopping for vintage china yesterday and oh my goodness, I fell in love with so much of it. The plan is to use it for a vintage themed wedding reception, then dispose of it, but now I want to keep it all. Only one problem...where to put it?

    1. Hi Claire - I love the hunting part of vintage china shopping. At the moment I'm hunting a pink butter dish....then I think my collection is about done....until I spy the next piece :)

  3. Fun post, Helen! And I especially love that great photo of you and your friends!

My favourites, after family and friends, are books (I'm sure this should be in capitals!) and travel adventures (we've visited some wonderful places on our travels and made some amazing friends!)

  6. I so enjoyed this, Helen. Like you, after family I treasure friends. Then there is the joy of being fit enough to go walking by the lake here, or elsewhere, trips either exploring new places or revisiting old faves, books, bubble baths and sharing lovely meals that have taken a little thought to prepare. I love sitting around chatting and laughing over a dining table or a picnic rug.

  7. Oh, Helen, I think I love Zeb too. He's beautiful!

Okay, have made an executive decision that friends and family aren't things…so my favourite things would be… Pizza and champagne nights (with good company), walks along the beach, my Pandora bracelet (for sentimental reasons) and books (and book clubs). Gorgeous post. I find that reflecting on what really makes me happy makes me incredibly grateful too.

    Wishing everyone a fab weekend!

    1. Hi Michelle - thanks for saying my Zeb is beautiful....he's a bit lazy, but we are the best of friends and even though he's nearly 18hh there's no shame in using a ladder lol. And a great weekend to you too :)

  8. I love your list, Helen! Especially Zeb. :)

My list would have my three dogs, Dougal, Oliver and Fergus, and my book collection. I also love living on the east coast, within driving distance of the beach, and my writing friends, so it looks like our lists would be quite similar!

  9. Hi Rachel - kindred spirits Rachel! It's interesting to see how many authors share similar things :)
