Weddings

Reading: Look Again - Lisa Scottoline

Listening to - The quail as they keep tabs on their chicks and hunt forage for food in my husband's vegetable garden.

listening to - my husband growling at the quail but not chasing them away.

It must be the time of the year for weddings.

We have just been to a family one in Golden Bay at the top of NZ's South Island. A beautiful setting for a beautiful day. Everyone was greatly moved by the couple's vows that they wrote. Both the bride and groom expressed their love for each other very elequently. They certainly reminded us all what romance is all about. Family weddings also have the added bonus of being able to catch up with all those family members I only see occasionally. The cheeky ones who kept asking me if I was getting inspiration for my next book.

And then next weekend we are off to a wedding celebration for a couple who were married in Italy last month - a long way from home for the groom but in the heart of the bride's family.

My close friends, whose son got married, flew to Italy and froze in the northern winter but had a wonderful time over there. Now back in our summer temperatures they are sharing the excitement of this marriage.

Have any of you been to weddings so far this year?

  1. Hi Sue --
No weddings yet this year (but the year is young!) Italy sounds romantic for a wedding.

I did have a family wedding last year (my cousin) which was a big Greek family wedding. My husband had never been to one before and had a blast attempting the traditional dancing!

  2. Anna, I'd love to go to a Greek wedding. They always look so much fun in the movies!! All that dancing. Although we had some fairly amazing dancing on the lawn on Saturday night, worked off all the seafood we'd eaten.

  3. Getting married overseas has always sounded soooo romantic! If I had my time again, I'd have eloped and then put on a celebration for friends and family back home.

My nephew (and Godson)is getting married next month to the girl he's been dating for 8 years. Wow. It's just weird to think about, Danny being all grown. But he's such a wonderful boy/man, and his fiancee is a sweetie! Now to lose those extra Ks to fit into that dress!!!

  4. When my DB and I got married we ran away from the South Island to the North Island and had only immediate family to share our celebration - not really overseas, is it? But it was fun, and so was the party back at home the following weekend.

  5. 3 weddings last year, but none this year. That's okay. This year it's babies.

  6. No weddings so far this year, but there's heaps of time yet. We went to a whole run of weddings a couple of years ago. Romantic!

  7. No weddings, but loads of babies this year! Some friends of mine got married while holidaying overseas and then had a party to celebrate when they got home -- I've always thought that was a great idea!

  9. No weddings yet this year. But I do like the sound of an overseas wedding - an Italian or Greek one sounds extravagantly romantic!

  10. Hi Sue!
No weddings so far this year, though my eldest daughter has been engaged for a few years now, so you never know!!

  11. Hi Sue - I haven't been to any weddings this year. . . but I work part time in my sister's bridal shop . . . so have had plenty of exposure to brides and unusual weddings themes. New trends arise, like the current one of brides 'trashing' their wedding dress. Certainly good research material. Cheers

  12. I went to a wedding a few weekends ago in Dunedin. It was great. Not only did the sun shine (one of only 5 days or so of good weather!) but the couple's vows were composed entirely of lines from songs. It was fantastic how they linked them and made it a happy time for all, trying to identify the lyrics.

  13. Hi Sue,

Playboy Doctor to Doting Dad? How come? Ah..yes, Playboys do turnaround and make a doting dad!

  14. It's early days, Sharon. Plenty of time for a wedding to come your way.
Mel, the two who got married this weekend had been together for six years, so you never know when you'll be surprised.
Helen, not sure that I like that trashing the wedding dress idea but hey, I'm not in my prime any more.
Zana, isn't it great how couples write their own vows nowadays.
Nas, I didn't write the title, but in truth it is the essence of the story. I brought him to his knees.

  15. No weddings for me (that I know of anyway ), but I went to my SIL late last year and had a ball. Point to note - the wedding was in Brisbane but the minister was Italian and had the sexiest accent ;)

  16. No weddings for me so far. There will be one by the end of this year though.

  17. Don't you love those accents, Anita. Sigh.

Alyn, a wedding to look forward, lovely.

  18. I haven't been to a wedding in an age, Sue. I shall keep my fingers crossed that a surprise invitation wings its way in the mail, though.

My DH and I did the elope thing which really was incredibly romantic. We were going to elope to Gretna Green (until we found out we'd have to meet a 21 day residency requirement). So we got married in London instead and flew out to Paris for the honeymoon. Sigh.

I bet you have a wonderful celebration next weekend!

  19. Looking forward to my own wedding in just under seven weeks :) It's wonderful reading and hearing about other people's wedding right now. Sue, you headed north. We're heading to Wanaka from our north Auckland home. We adore that part of the country so it will be a very special day for us all.
